Incidentally, I'd just like to report that whilst trying to solve the problem which forms the subject of this thread I came across some advice to ensure whilst synching the carbs that both hoses are of equal length. I'd never thought this would make a difference once a vacuum was established but it would seem that it does. I re-checked mine after trimming one of the hoses on my gauge to compensate for the length of the fuel tap vacuum hose and they were about 10 mm Hg out, and I'd checked them the other day. I know this is within spec but I like them to be closer than that!

So are you saying, when there is no lead in the tank, pulling your knob for an extra 5 mm will leave you a little off colour?
