Not the best starter

My second storm, the one with the race cans doent like starting.

Its best chance is with no choke at all and even then it just offers then stops - if i pull choke on it seems a bit lazy on start.

After multiple goes on the starter without choke it eventually fires and runs.

Sometimes with this process i get a loud backfire.

Once it has been started it restarts with no problems

I need to check the receipts that came with it to see if it had a new battery

Any ideas chaps ?

they can be funny old starters. my two are totally different, in fact my blue one was a bitch until i got the knack it needed.
no throttle. a tiny bit of choke and as soon as it fires i pull the choke fully out and stay away from the throttle otherwise it does what yours is doing..be worth checking also were the choke cable splits into two make sure its seated ok or one of your chokes mite be slightly lifted.

I had issues with mine a little while ago.
Mac was most helpful posting his starting technique, but it only worked a couple of times then back to square one.

Anyway, now solved, and a long story short but... When I bought the bike just over a year ago the battery was clapped out. I replaced it with the cheapest, nastiest battery I could find which was absolutely fine over the summer months when it was warm and I didn't have the lights on much.
Now, although it sounds as if it's turning over just fine in the mornings, it does exactly as yours is doing.
If I leave it on charge overnight, it fires straight up on choke with no issues.
The difference in cranking speed is so minimal that it's hard to tell the difference, but it is the difference between starting first time and ages prodding the starter and wondering if it's going to go.

So, battery?

I agree with Murv, having the extra poke from a Motbatt helps alot. The standard battery has no go and the motbatt will turn it over 5 or 6 times and still crank it at the same speed.

I had the same problem with the CBF, if it didn't start first prod of the starter, the battery lost a bit of poke, and thus didn't crank it fast enough, then flooded.

Or a lightweight Lithium one for about 100 pounds, but you won't be able house an ordinary charger or battery maintainer.

Whats the thinking on which Motobatt?

There are two listed for the storm - mtbx9 and mtbx12

The 12 is slightly taller but has more cranking power

Thoughts ?

Go for the bigger - though if your VTR is 97-01 you'll need to take the the black placcy lid off and jam the slightly taller battery in.

Just checked the battery and its a mtbx12 although not a motobatt

But i tried one of the techniques that had been suggested and one of them works !!

Tiny bit of choke and when it fires give it more choke and bingo it starts !!!

I'll keep trying it though!!!
