Bike in the van is the best way to do it, as you know I've been doing it for years.
You go where you want, stay where you want, and get the bike out and do what ever you want when ever you feel like it, you can just go off anywhere and not worry about finding any digs, you can throw all your gear in the van so nothing to carry on the bike, plus you're all refreshed and ready to enjoy the ride rather than recovering from one which you had to do just to get there
