Petrol tank refurb (not respray)
Petrol tank refurb (not respray)
I'm getting an old 1973 Honda back on the road, but the tank needs some love. It has a pushed-in dent one side - probably fell on someone's knee- plus is full of rust, so needs de-rusting and treating with a sealant.
When it's done I'll get it sprayed.
Any recommendations?
Thanks,
Tony

Re: Petrol tank refurb (not respray)
Funnily enough, I'm just having my 'Storm tank worked on by Stan. I certainly get the impression that they're very thorough with their work. The plan with mine is to have it extended vertically by 50mm to get some decent volume.Duffy1964 wrote: ↑Thu Jul 23, 2020 5:20 pm Just found this, any good?

I must confess that it's taking rather a long time but what with the disruption caused by Covid it's not surprising...
Keeping my fingers crossed that I may get it back in the next week or so
I'll let you know how it turns out

Re: Petrol tank refurb (not respray)
That sounds interesting. I have to ask, being a nosey bugger, what sort of costs are involved
Re: Petrol tank refurb (not respray)
With the VAT, Stan quoted me £560. Quite a bit of dough but, there's a LOT of work involved including various treatments to the inside of the tank which I couldn't hope to do economically and reliably let alone the metalwork itself which is no mean feat. The tank was a slightly dinged effort off Ebay for £30.
According to my quick calculations, 50mm increase in height should give an extra 9 litres but it'll probably be a little less due to the contouring of the tank.
It'll come filled (not with petrol...

Cheers, now that is interesting and quite an investment. Think I shall just keep setting that trip and clenching as the miles trip up to 90

"Stan quoted me £560." Eeeek!
You could possibly get a new one made for that kind of refurb price.

or would one of these fit?

Re: Petrol tank refurb (not respray)
I did have a bit of a search but didn't find anyone who made larger tanks for the VTR. A one-off is going to be probably even more than I'm paying...
Mind you, I have a bit of a habit of starting mod's and then letting them get financially out of hand....

Admittedly these were from around 2018

Re: Petrol tank refurb (not respray)
I've found a guy to spray the SP2 and the SL125 parts. All I need now is to find someone who can blast the inside of the SP2 tank.
I don't mind buying a blasting cabinet and some medium, but the cost of a compressor is off-putting.
Has anyone got access to blasting for four pieces, or a compressor I can access?
Advice welcome.

Re: Petrol tank refurb (not respray)
Thanks, Mac, I'll give them a call.
I just don't have the space for a compressor, blasting cabinet and medium pot, unfortunately.
