I've got a few questions ......

The choke cable barely pulls out and doesn't stay out

The engine hunts and stutters a bit about 3/4,000;mechanics say it's because it's been standing a while,stale petrol etc and it will go after about 200 miles riding.....

Re cct:mechanic said they DO give a warning-rev engine and on revs slowdown,the camchain will clack clak as it's swinging about,untensed.(he said NEVER go on forums).

Is a hugger necessary;keeps things cleaner I suppose?(Ditto fender extender).

There are obviously loads more questions but these are the ones that spring to mind .......... FOR NOW!!!!!

On a four cylinder bike your mechanic may be correct however with the VTR having a CCT for each cylinder so when the crap Honda auto cct spring, on the front one normally, let’s go the chain slackens, jumps the sprocket and your valves have a fight with your piston crowns! Nasty expensive business. Either do the stopper mod described and advocated by AMcQ on here. Or fit some manual CCT’s. They only need very minimal maintenance. Just don’t do nothing

I've noticed that the large majority of bikes for sale on ebay/autotrader/gumtree haven't had the mod;I'd say 3/4 are standard.

I bought a bike that had been laid up for more than 10 years with just over 4000 miles on it.I took a chance and rode it to Assen for Moto GP,but after advice from the men on here as soon as I got back I installed manuals.

If The Stopper Mod has been done you won't be able to tell just by looking at the original CCT's from the outside.

I spoke to another mechanic,salt of the earth,well respected,runs race team,mega reputation,trading as son and now head for decades.
He said it would show warning signs,ie rattles and he knew of the cct issue.

I suppose ...... I don't feel up to doing job myself .........

Any idea how much a mechanic may charge?
I'm thinking £3/400?

Regarding my hunting/stuttering around 3/4,000 rpm he advized E5 petrol and blasting it for a good stretch;reckons it's been standing around,old petrol etc
(Over the last 10 years it's done crazy low mileage)

Your well respected mechanic obviously dosn't know VTR's very well...They dont rattle thay just go POP! Then rattle as the valves & piston make aquaintance...

Id do it for £275 + biscuits...You supply the parts ...

Choke cable could be routed wrong and mine snapped beind the knurdled nob so would not stay out... used a peg for a couple of months, now replaced with an ebay non oem one a steal at £8. Fitted fine just had to file out the choke clamp a little as the barrel section was a bigger.

Engine hunting on mine was calmed down by doing the throttle position mode TPS, and going back to a STD air filter previously a K&N. Later replace carbs (with Dyno stage 1 kit) with set of second carbs I belive to be std setup. Now runs great just the odd carb fart.

I would say a hugger is a must, to keep the road crap away.

Still on STD CCTS but this winter doing the stopper mode or may be manual set up.

I'm currently trying E5 and just using the bike,it has been standing a few months and very low mileage every year for the last 10 years.
Also upshifting so revs drop,thus avoiding the hunting zone!
More bodging.
