no start, solonoid just clicks
no start, solonoid just clicks
Long time since last on here. but need some help.
Have 2001 xjr 1300 which was knocked over in car park, been difficult to start ever since. So ignition on, press starter and just get loud click from starter solonoid. replaced that but made no difference, replaced starter motor with new one. still just click and no start.
any of you electrical wizards have any ideas what to check next. often wished id kept the vtr.............but life is full of changes
thanks Paul

it may be clever, but its not big.
Re: no start, solonoid just clicks
Try a different battery.
It may show full charge but if it's dropped a cell It wont have the amps under load to fire it up.
I know this from own non start issues... Changed 3x relays, starter & cable before trying a different batt & it fired up first time.

Making up since 2007, sometimes it's true...Honest...
Re: no start, solonoid just clicks
battery quite new and shows full charge................worth a try though.....thanks

Re: no start, solonoid just clicks
Does that model have a tip over switch?
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
Re: no start, solonoid just clicks
Good to hear from you Paul
It sounds like not enough umph in the battery as Mac suggests I agree. Also check the battery leads positive (+) and negative (-) connections are all done up tight and are clean, if you've not done so already.
A good thought by Tony
Chris.
PS. Just another thought. Check the engine is free to turn over with the bike in gear 2nd or 3rd, you'll probably need a hand to check that

A good battery, check all the terminals are tight between the starter motor and the battery( including the battery earth) and give it another go.
if the starter motor was damaged it would blow a fuse so it's definitely a power supply issue and not an excessive load problem.

My new ride is a bit of a Howler and I love to make her Squeal
Re: no start, solonoid just clicks
so.....new solonoid, new starter and now new battery..................still get click from starter solonid but nothing happens. lights horn ok
what next ??????
what next ??????
it may be clever, but its not big.
Re: no start, solonoid just clicks
Check the starter cable. Check the main earth.
Check the starter button.
Check the starter button.

Re: no start, solonoid just clicks
Best of luck I have one of these mainly because my knees can't cope with the VTR.
Re: no start, solonoid just clicks
So I have a basic continuity meter, so wiil check anything I can get at. Stupid question but should I disconnect the battery first. And should ignition be on? Can't see how it could be ignition though cos power gets to solonoid. Ie clicking.
it may be clever, but its not big.
Re: no start, solonoid just clicks
I take it that's not a Multi-Meter

Multi-meters are not that expensive, and always handy to have

You really need to be able to check voltage at the battery terminals positive (+) and negative (-) at this point. If the battery is good as you think and fully charged you should see around 12.7 volts, that's with the ignition off and battery still connected.
Did you check (as I suggested above) if the engine can rotate with the bike in gear

Chris.
Re: no start, solonoid just clicks
Engine rotates and brand new battery and fully charged too. Multi meter no use if I don't know how to use it. Old one really only shows if live wire. And circuit continuity so should be OK to start with.
it may be clever, but its not big.
Re: no start, solonoid just clicks
have you tried bridging the solenoid connectors with an insulated screwdriver ? this will by pass the solenoid, if the motor turns then you have a duff solenoid.
Also if that doesn't work remove the starter motor and bench test it.
