Odometer issue

since along lay off in the shed, when re connecting the new battery on my friend firestorm the odometer just shows a series of dashes like this --------- We have checked the fuse and that's ok
any ideas

I take it you have tried pressing the black button on the speedo pod face to change it from the trip meter to the mileage covered
The trip meter zero's itself when the battery is disconnected,
