My new bike, the lad I bought it off had recently installed a new battery.
It started from cold easily when I went to view it, and restarted from hot easily.
They owner put 20 miles on it the morning before I collected.
That was last Sunday.
I haven't ridden it since, as I was getting new tyres etc.
When I tried to start it this morning it just screeched, like the starter not engaging, but the instrument lights were flickering so I figured charge the battery.
So I have a 6a car charger, connected battery and it showed fully charged in 15 mins - and the bike started straight away.
I come back 5 mins later and it won't start, again starter screeching like its not connecting.
Multimeter set to 20v DC
1) After removing the charger the voltage is 13.8v, and kinda stays like that.
2) Try to turn the engine over it drops to 10.5v and the starter just wails but does not engage.
3) Then test voltage again and its dropped to 12.7
Any ideas?
I will check reg/rec now but I think battery is dead.

Bad new good news...
1) Reg rec wires testing each one to ground as per this thread https://vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=28771
I get 9.8v through each one.
2) Stator resistance all three are all 0.4 ohms.

Are those MTX reg/regs any good?

I see the connectors here at Rexs Speed shop.
https://www.rexs-speedshop.com/product- ... onnectors/
He also has reg recs at £130 each...
Hard to know which one to buy?

Re: I think my battery is fubar, check my working...
The noise you mention could be causing the problem, the starter clutch has a habbit of doing that on storms, its a kinda one way gear and when they wear you get that noise, its a bollox of a thing to change but is possible.
the gear that causes the problem is in behind and just infront of the flywheel.(as in to the left of the flywheel as you look at it)

Yep, I think you are right, transfer gears.
I posted a video recording the screech on the starter problems thread. viewtopic.php?p=507690#p507690.
But I still have reg/rec issues I think?

Re: I think my battery is fubar, check my working...
Just coming back to this.
After fixing my transfer gears so nicely, thanks to all the input on here, my bike's starting and charging system is working fine.
For the moment I have done about 100 miles on it in 4 short journeys, and stopped and checked the charging system 8 or 9 times.
Ignition off - 12.74 v every time.
At 2000rpm the voltage is always 14.4v.
I'm still super wary and will order a mosfet on payday, but fingers crossed, I think its OK..

Re: I think my battery is fubar, check my working...
I fitted a voltage display which increases the chances of you catching a failed reg rec or a wiring connection issue before you damage the battery or run out of battery power.
The one I had also showed tyre pressures, with sensors built into the valve cap rather than glued to the rim internally as in most cars. Cheap enough, but not very waterproof, so I had to replace the head unit every year or two. IIRC it was less than 20 quid.

It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

I also fitted a volt meter on mine as Tony. I fitted it before I purchased my MOSFET rectifier/regulator, even so good for piece of mind at a glance
