Stupid exhaust question.. GRMoto into Black Widow to Frankenstein a high level system..

Post by acrmnsm »

25 years ago I worked as an engineer in a stainless exhaust manufacturing facility, and now I can barely remember any of this.

I want a high level system for my Storm. Looking at Black Widow but I don't really like any of their silencers.
The GRMoto silencers, they look great, but they only come in low level, but Black Widow do link pipes.

I cant tell if the GR moto silencer is male or female, it has the end slit so is that actually male?
The silencer end of the Black Widow link pipe is defo female as its expanded.
Do you think this will work? Images below.

Contact both manufacturers and ask for the dimensions.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

There's a good chance that both are 51mm as this is more or less a universally used size.

I did this and as per Martins comment, I was told they are both 51mm.
But, it turns out the black widow link pipe is 51.5mm, luckily there is an exhaust shop near me with a shrinker so I should be able to get it to fit.

Wouldn't it be easier to swage the other section a bit larger?

Maybe, I will have a discussion with the guy, the link pipes are the significantly cheaper part of it, I'd prefer to risk the link pipes...

Old school engineer, matey. That is to say, I was in the engineering club at school. Everything since I've made up as I went along!
The most advanced thing we did at engineering club was a double-acting steam engine, latest tech when I was a kid.
Lathe, shaper, vertical and horizontal mill, a table grinder and a powered hacksaw. None of your cad-cam 3d printing and finite element analysis in those days🤔
Hence the 18th century phraseology.

Funnily enough I have spent the last 25 years of my life developing expertise in simulation various swaging process, among other things.
I still couldn't get a straight answer on exact dims out of GRMoto or Black Widow...
My exhaust guy will be looking at it this week, so I hope to have the results to show soon.
