I took it off, leaking like crazy.
Interestingly the front sprocket cover thing says "MAGNESIUM" on the side, and there was some lumpy looking bluey gray corrosion muck in there that was not like your common or garden aluminium corrosion product.

acrmnsm wrote: Fri Aug 16, 2024 11:53 am OK, well hmm, I may order one, I have a leak on my slave, which is weird:
1) it lost all the fluid out of the slave whilst stood on the workbench for 1 week.
2) Refilled and bled with a vacuum bleeder and it did exactly as others have described, nothing, nothing, nothing, then bang fully bled!
3) For the last 2 weeks whilst I have been riding the bike, it has not lost a drop...
The VTR I just picked up had been sitting two years (failed CCT) and had a slave leak when I bought it. Fluid in the master had turned to sludge as well. I cleaned the whole system out and tried my luck at reinstalling it without replacing the piston seals and what do you know, 4 weeks and no leaks. The seal might be one that operates best under pressure so good clean fluid and regular use may be all it wants.

I had no issues bleeding but I made sure to have everything hanging somewhat vertical so there were no high spots for air to catch. Then instead of attaching the hand pump to my reverse bleeder, I attached an air pump and forced it up from the bottom until it came out the top banjo, then attached the banjo and let the last of the air gravity feed up to the master. It was an innovative solution, and a bit messy, but took me all of 5 minutes to get solid pressure.

Stupid question.
The line of corrosion caused by leaking fluid inside the slave cylinder socket on the sprocket carrier is as high as the hole for the clutch pushrod.

Does this mean that dot4 has probably leaked in to my engine oil?
I have marked up an image of a sprocket carrier I culled from ebay. see red line...

You'll be ok. The fluid will take the path of least resistance, so will simply flow past the piston and dribble into the front sprocket compartment.
The pushrod has a seal; if it was worn you would get engine oil coming out under running crankcase pressure.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Its a small contribution to recycling and sustainability.
Hopefully makes up for all the fuel I have burnt in the name of fun.
