Bike comms....

Me and the other half took a nice ride to Betws-y-coed today setting off from Leicestershire. We have been needing some form of comms for a while so we can talk to each other, god only knows why I agreed to this We have a set of Cobra walkie talkies at the moment but stopped using them a while back as we could not figure out how to get the VOX setting to work so the push button was to much hassle to use while trying to ride.

Any recommendations?

I've got an auto com unit. Well worth the money. I can't recommend you any specific models as i've only used the one really but any will do most likely. They're not cheap though so you'd better be sitting down.

on the note of bike comms slightly off subject, what are the rider to pillion systems like now.
I had a autocom system a number of years ago and found that the speaker that fitted in the helmet was a right pain, both to get in the helmet and also with it wedge against the side of you ear. have the improved at all and do the newer systems to bike to bike as well as main rider to pillion and to bike?

Starcom advance is a great system.
Hardwired to the bike and a little time consuming to set up but excellent nonetheless. Plus you can plug in your iPod / phone / GPS etc...

Now I really don't know if this works, but I have heard that simply pressing your helmets together (Ooh Matron!) and shouting can let you hear a surprising amount.

As I say I have not tried it but it's got to be worth a go, especially if it isn't too good, as in
"Can we look at that shoe shop?"
"Sorry love I cant quite hear you"
"That looks like a nice pub"
"So it does" Blast given the game away!

I use a Cardo Scala Teamset Bluetooth Motorcycle Intercom to do rider to passenger coms and also mobile phone . both work well up to 80 and beyond even with open race cans, and with earplugs in.

I was taking work calls as I was heading to the ferry for the TT, and sitting on the M6 at 80 the guy on the other end was shocked when I told him not only was I not in the office I was currently riding my bike.......he said he couldnt hear any background noise.

I also use last number redial on the mobile to go bike to bike when riding with my mate and that worked realy well for clarifying directions or finding out where he went when he is no longer in your mirrors etc.

My mate uses the Interphone F4 and says the volume is higher on that, but once I moved the earphones closer with little spacers, my Scala system matches the volumne

What's changed with Comms devices in the last ten years? Loads of guys on the Wales meet had comms and I'm toying with the idea of getting one. Mainly for music and directions.

It's probably worth getting a latest version mesh system. They now connect with other makes without issues.
I have a Cardo which apparently connects four, but I've only worked out how to connect to one other rider so far.
