New bike thoughts
I've been looking around at bikes and I'd more or less settled on a 1050 Speed Triple. Yesterday though, I looked at a 2009 Monster 1100S. Tidy, 18k miles Termignonis, Ohlins, bunch of other accessories along with all the standard parts. One owner from new with loads of main dealer history and it's local.
It's the air-cooled 2-valve engine, so not loads of power, but from what I've read there's bucket loads of torque and the handling is sweet. So, learned friends, why wouldn't I buy it?

Re: New bike thoughts
Those Dukes are nice,,, But.. one day maybe not tomorrow but some day you will walk over to it and it will go all Italian on you
.
Have you looked at any of the Yamahas that use the CP3 motor? MT09 etc.... outstanding motor that goes for ever, worst mistake i ever made was selling mine, and iv made some mistakes
, go get a spin on one.

the older i get,the faster i was

Re: New bike thoughts
Iirc the Ducati Monster 1100s you're talking about has desmodromic operated valves, so no cam-belts to worry about
That has to be a bonus in my book.
Good suggestion from Rob
If it were me I would most likely stick with one of the main four Japanese manufacturers,
Chris.

I am looking at, sort of, an XSR900 as well; but they're not really in my budget.fabiostar wrote:Those Dukes are nice,,, But.. one day maybe not tomorrow but some day you will walk over to it and it will go all Italian on you![]()

Everything I've read about the 1100 is good as far as reliability goes. Apparently they were the first bike built after Audi bought them. German engineering and Italian design - best of both worlds? I'll see tomorrow.

Re: New bike thoughts
I'd throw in that rumours report pretty high prices for servicing the Desmodromic stuff. You may look up the costs and maintenance schedule on how often that's required.
Anekdote from the 90's: A friend of mine used to blow up his RD 350 F2 on a regular base every one or two years.
Then he bought a brand new YZF 750 because 4 strokes are more reliable.
Well, his first service left him with some 700 Deutschmark less (which equaled around 2 sets of pistons plus honing for the RD)
We all had a good laugh and pulled his leg for years and years with that story :-)

Re: New bike thoughts
Great Chris. I liked the bike and how it rode but I think I need to wait until I've got my bike sold. I need the budget and the space before I get another one. At least I've a better idea of bikes I like.sirch345 wrote:How did it all go Nick?freeridenick wrote: ↑Sat Nov 16, 2024 11:30 pmI am looking at, sort of, an XSR900 as well; but they're not really in my budget.fabiostar wrote:Those Dukes are nice,,, But.. one day maybe not tomorrow but some day you will walk over to it and it will go all Italian on you![]()

Re: New bike thoughts
There was a 'but' with the 1100 I tried so I backed away from the purchase. I had very good intentions in waiting until I'd sold more of the Firestorm, but then this came along. Right bike, right money, wrong time. Oh well.
So I just went and bought it
.
1100 Evo version with TC and ABS. Much cleaner and better looking, I think.

Re: New bike thoughts
Yes that is lovely Nick
And you've still got a V-Twin (L twin), also it's in Red so that is a double win in my view
Chris.
