cylinder head

Post by Christos »

Hi. I have a varadero 1000 injection with 137000 miles. I had done a cylinder pressure measurement and found a high pressure of 14.5 bar. on the front cylinder and 14 bar on the rear. and I said today to open it up to clean the carbon and saw these scratches on the head gasket. does anyone know what it could be?

No idea what the marks are, but it should be ok, as long as you use a genuine Honda gasket.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

The marks more or less in the centre of the red circle you have drawn are on the outer edge of the cylinder liner, so as Tony says shouldn’t cause a problem with a genuine Honda head gasket.

How they got there is anybody’s guess,

Chris.

the project continues. I decided to take the engine down. and do a total rebuild. i have the service manual and have read many threads in here. but i am confused how much with the 6mm bolts on the cylinder head how much torque do they need. and what are the 12mm bolts that want 34nm? also the cylinder bores are quite shiny.

Shinny bores are fine. Honing is done to remove the marks from boring not to hold oil. I have an article from the SAE about it somewhere.

The 6mm bolts are the large flange ones, I think, so 12Nm. The front of the manual has all the specific torque settings plus a table for standard bolts.

There are no 12mm bolts on the heads. Check the service manual for an addendum, also make sure you're not looking at a service manual for another country. The US bikes had a PAIR system that could be related to the 12mm bolt. Just a thought.
