2nd hand storms (newer ones) where are they all?

Post by Tempest »

Just wondered..........

Although I don't need one, or want one (as I have my storm already)

I'm a bit puzzled as to where all the "newer" 2nd hand ones are.

If you look on Ebay, 99.9% of the storms all seem to be 1997 - 2000 ish range.

Once in a blue moon does a 2001-2003 type bike slip thru.

One could say, ahhh, they new ones are so loved by their riders, no-one who'd bought one wants to sell it.

Or, may it just be that "Young" bikers are brain washed into big multi engines, so there just are not that many Storms out there compaired to other (more sexy?) bikes......

You often find other bikes in the 2 or 3 year old range.
Very seldom find such new (ish) storms for sale.

Here is what I think. Look who has bought them. 99% people who either already past all "latest liter sportbike" rage and enjoying pure fun of big twin, or actually people who sold their 97 storms just to buy new one :) Quite a few on this site too! :)
Or born again bikers switching from first revival 600 bike to next one on way back to riding bikes.

But generally very very few young people.

another thing - new Storm got bigger tank, comfier clipons and probably people do not rush to change for "latest and greatest", because in fact very few comparable liter sport twins actually affordable and availabe on market.
There is like 3 big twins categories - TL-S, SV1000S, VTR1000F, Falco for sport-ish tour-ish bikes, Tuono,Monster,KTM990 for streets, RC51, Mille, TL-R for track. Rest are Ducati's and Buells - no need to explain why those not in same category. So, in fact Storm have little or no competitors in it's niche.

yeah, they're nowhere near as common as CBR's, R6/1's Hornets etc.

And, seems people who buy storms keep them a lot longer than the "next years bike" folks.

Interesting figures for Australia. Sport-tourers sales, VTR1000F second place with 143 in half 2005 and 183 second half. First place superblackbird with respectively 277 and 243

UK 80% of sales represented purely by GSXR, R1 and 1000rr. Rest is minimal.

I can only see reports as of autumn 2005 from MCIA, so can't say what is situation in UK with Storm...but I guess it's small since 80% owned by race reps anyway...

Interesting point you make Bluesman.
I'm one of those born again riders having come back to it all with a 600 Suzuki. Now want a fastish, reliable thumper (have already ordered Dave Greenwood mod CCT springs before I've even bought a Storm!) that looks good and feels lighter than its capacity would lead you to believe.
F'storm seems to fill the bill. Not looking forward to it though in regard to cr*p tank capacity/range and the lack of a fuel guage. My Suze has a guage about the size of the tacho and a range of about 180-190 miles.
Not got the thump, but it's a goodly buzzing machine.
I think a lot of owners are of the older ish age bracket ie over thirty (me? 47) so they aren't swayed by the latest must-have techno gadgetry. They want to enjoy their riding without a lot of fuss.
Sorry if yer a tweny one year old scratcher, but just my opinion OK?
Wonder how many on this forum have their bikes as: a) summer w/e fun machine. b) commuter transport c) Only transport?

Nah :) I'm 35 with 3 kids and hopeless mortgage  Seriously.

I just do not want to change it. I got serious suspension upgrade cheaply (all-singing shock absorber and good front forks), larger 19 l tank off eBay, some small bits and it (bike and upgrade) did cost me just about 200 Euros more than I got for my Hornet when I sold it. And TBH I do not want to change Storm unless:

1. honda will make lighter 1000 cc VFR
2. honda will make much better NOT sportbike VTR1200
3. Suzuki will actually put Stratosphere in production
4. Triumph will have same level of presence and spare parts as Honda in the world

So, since all above is very remote possibility :) I have now bought couple of used Givi panniers, new rear plastic, used Givi rack from Bandit and trying to make my Storm into convertible tourer 8)
Idea is - have 2 sets for Storm. Set 1 -change rear plastic, put rack and panniers on and seat pad- tourer ready, wife happy. Set 2 - change real plastic back (takes 3 min), remove rack and panniers - canyon carver ready. I already have CBR1000F clipons on so comfort is OK.
If I will achieve that combi-bike objective - this fits my bill. Hell with all those injection gimmicks etc - I do not care.

About tank range. Since installing 19 liter tank and new clean airfilter I do 200 km till reserve and another 40-45 on reserve. Enough for me. That's eh...150-155 miles on full tank.

Hey.

I'm 23. Have recently (august last year) come back to bikeing (how can i say that at my age but hey). But i know what you mean alot of people i know who are around my age want sports bikes. Can't see why? Yeh goes like a rocket, which means A) bye bye licence B) Your gonna be in pain if you want to go furhter then your local Tesco. LOL

I use mine pretty much all of the time now. Although i've got a car i'm finding that everytime i run my car i just wish i was on the bike. Think i need to buy a faster car :-)

Have to say though the storm does everything you would ever want a bike to do. Ok it's not 200 mile an hour bike...but who cares???

i have owned mine for 3yrs nearly and ive got to say that after the amount of bikes ive owned and/or riden the storm gives you a way bigger grin that any of the sports bikes be them 400/600/1000 you cant beat that sound it makes when you exit a corner in 4th while all the revvy 4cycls are starting to scream in 2nd

Its the torque and the way everyone turns when they hear that v-twin thud even when you are just cruising. Personally not bothered about the tank range, did 2500 miles in a week across europe with two mates on ZX-6R and GSXR-600, I was comfortable, they were behind! ha ha!
