G'day all, just found this board and thought I'd say 'ello.

I've got a '98 'fighter (cut-down VFR fairing, Renthals, single seat, G-Forec cans, skanky desert camo paint, air-shifter) that I've had for two months and put 4k miles on (haven't been out on it as much as I'd like, y'know?).

Bought it off a mate who bought it as a cosmetic write-off and putit back on the road and, allegedly, it's done about 13k miles all told. Should I be paranoid about CCTs then?

So when you say 'skanky desert camo paint' do you mean that insipid yellow colour that the plebs on here mistakenly think is SOOO cool and makes their bike faster &more powerful :twisted: or has it had an aftermarket paint job done? Pics would be good :)


WRT CCT's, you can be paranoid about them and change them regularly or you can take more of a laisser faire attitude and forget about them altogether
Seeing as how there seems to be no rhyme or reason to how they go (some have gone a few hundred miles after being replaced 8O , others are at 40,000 miles plus with the original ones)

I've spoken to Roger at Revolution racing (VTR guru) on this subject in the past and his experience/ thoughts included an interesting point
-He's never had one go on his race bikes

Why?
Race bikes are stored and warmed up on paddock stands (ie vertical)
Race bikes are warmed up by reasonably vigorous blipping of the throttle
Race bikes never really use engine braking -they go from throttle on to brakes on

Seems the things that kill CCT's are
- low rev lurchy running of the engine (when the chain is slapping about)
- shutting off abruptly at high speed & using the engine braking to slow you down

With this in mind the following advice makes sense
1. NEVER leave your bike sat idling on its side stand to warm up. Much better to just start it and ride off, refraining from thrashing it until its warmed up
2. When you do shut the throttle, roll it off rather than just slamming it shut


I'd be interested to hear from people who have had CCT failure how this relates to their riding/ starting of the bike

Cheers Ben! The paint is a home-done cheapy 'cos the bodywork was made up of panels from different bikes and, yes, it is horrid. I like it though ... :)

Interesting about the CCTs - I usually fire mine up on full choke, then knock the choke off after about ten seconds and just let it run while I go back inside and get me lid, gloves etc. Then ride it away, not opening it up until the temp gauge is off the bottom mark, y'know?

It's due for a service soon anyway so I'll get 'em to look at the tensioners and see what they're like.

Odds on they'll not see much on the tensioners!!

When they go its the end of the spring that snaps off so the tensioner is allowed to unwind -there's nothing really to see before it goes (unless they've got an x-ray machine and can spot metal fatigue :lol: )

However, for the peace of mind, if they're gonna be taking them out to inspect anyway, you might as well throw a new set in
(please oh please make them competent enough to set the engine position right first BEFORE they remove the tensioner -otherwise its a head-off job to re-set the valve timing!!)

Paint job isn't too bad but I'm not sure about he fairing -looks too big and too far forward IMHO

Not wishing to contradict you Ben, but when I spoke to Roger about CCT's and replacing mine with manual ones, he said they always used manual ones on their race bikes, not the standard ones.
Two bikes, still only four cylinders!
