`ello guys and girls, can I get some sound advice about changing my exhaust system. I am new to VTRs and have a shiny red `un (1997 model). It is all standard, and works nicely, but I want to put a better sounding exhaust on there, my younger brother says to go for a yoshimura or arrow set, but what d`ya reckon? Also there seem to be types which are raised up there by the seat and some which are at a low level - which ones sound the best? I will put some nice photos on here soon as mine is very shiny!

Most of us don't change the complete exhaust system just the end can's, (silencers) which will allow the engine to rev more freely than with the standard Honda silencers, and release that lovely V/Twin sound
It will be a matter of what you actually like and wish to pay
Quite often you will see can's for sale on ebay
It might pay for you to go to a Firestorm ride out so you can have a listen to different makes of cans if you are not sure
I myself like my Scorpions, which are race can's (no baffles) mine fitted very well with both can's lining up with each other and level at the back, not all makes fit quite so well
I think most can's now are not race can's but have a removable baffle

Greetings from Texas! Cheap that we are, we use a method called the bafflectomy on the stock exhaust. One of the monitors of our usa site has a write up on it (complete with drawings) in the archives. Just search for bafflectomy on the site http://www.superhawkforum.com and with a little webbing you'll find it. It doesn't give much horsepower boost but it does improve the sound and you can do it with the pipes still on the bike.

If you don't want to go for 'not for road use' race cans, I've currently got Remus road legal cans on mine.
They are really well made and sound lovely yet are still road legal
Every time I take it in for the MoT the tester comes out and says he can't pass race pipes
I show him the E4 mark and all is well
ps might have something to do with the kill-switch backfires I do have blown some of the baffling out

i have blue flame, high level.
i don't think there is a difference in sound between high and low, most manufactureres make both, the difference is in wether you keep the baffles in or not, if they are supplied with them at all, i think Kaz's might be marked not for road use, mine are BS stamped, so you take your chances with whatever you buy.
baffles allow you to get an MOT easily without the hassle of changing the cans, most storms with race cans are extreamly loud, to the point of being to loud for some but thats the way they should be, awsome to hear.
as for which is better high or low level, thats personal choice, i don't think it makes much difference other than visually, although you might get some extra ground clearance, Ben might be able to comment on that as he races a storm

Kev, I ordered some scorpion race cans, but it didnt say if they come with baffles or not-Itake it they`re easy to put in and take out for the MOT?

if they are race cans you have bought chances are they won't have baffles, but if they are road legal race cans then they might, i guess you'll have to wait and see what you get.
keep an eye out for decibel killers, or similar baffles, they are bolt in, you might just need to drill a small hole in the end spout to be able to bolt them in for the MOT.
