Stalling on tickover

Post by Nuggs »

Whilst on tickover at traffic lights etc, my bike regurarly hiccups to a degree it can stall the engine. It doesnt have to be the fan kicking in, and is intermittent. It drinks fuel as most of these things do, it doesnt emit black smoke either so I dont think its running rich.

I have raised the tickover to over 1000 and this reduces problem but I'd like any suggestions to solve it?

Balance the carbs
Tis a comon problem with the VTR that they seem to go out of balance relatively quickly

And WRT running rich -yes they all do that too but fitting an aftermarket filter makes a big difference to both mpg and responsiveness
I've got an inferiority complex
But its not a very good one!

Thanks,

I shall give the carbs and new filter a try. Do you know what aftermarket one is best, I'm not a fan of fitting aftermarket stuff to be honest so dont know what brand is often best.

Shouldn't the Firestorm tickover be at 1200rpm ish anyway? If you've RAISED it to 1000rpm, then I'd imagine it is conking out.

My VTR dies occasionally too at traffic lights, but I think it's just the way it is.

Hope this helps

That sounds about right to me as well, mine also conks out when it feels like it but it's not really a problem once you are use to it, although some owners say their bikes never do that :!:

Regular servicing will help to cut the conking out down (like new air filter, spark plugs and balancing the carbs at recommended service times) but it won't elimate it, well it hasn't on my bike anyway :!:

Just to ad.....

I think the manual says 1200 - 1300rpm tickover.

There is also the little "Move the rubber carb tube from it's position under air filter/tank so it hangs down (someone will find the link with the pics for you)

I've done all this, and it cured the problem 90% of the time.

But, just now and again it can stall for no reason.

One thing I learned though.
If it stalls and you are going along, thee's no point in dropping the clutch to spin the engine (using that back wheel) to get it going again.

It just locked the wheel up tight (too much turning power required)
I just had to punch the starter and was ok again.

I've done all the tweaks and mods and changed the filters.
Only thing I've not done is balance the carbs, but I think my bike was done quite recently anyway.

Just one of the little Quirks of the bike it seems :)

You must be very light or have non sticky tyres!! If mine cuts out and I'm doing 10mph or above I can bump her in 2nd or 3rd and she fires up straight away.

Well that’s reassuring because mine did this today and I thought here we go.
Due to cutbacks the light at the end of the tunnel has been switched off!

At least others are having the same problem. Seems to make it easier to digest!

I may just have to live with it....along with the draining battery power over periods of non use!

Sadly I havent. Ive just got a jumping station instead. I do however sneak a shot of the Optimate at my work now and again. I have just extended the leads off the terminals to make it easier to connect - £4 DIY
