Yet another stunting question

Post by Squiffythewombat »

Hey Guys,

Waiting to get my bike back and have a few questions before im back OTR:

1) the amount of oil that must be collecting in my airbox due to wheelies

2) dragging the rear seems to have little effect compared to rolling off the throttle and using the torque, am i doing something wrong or is this a storm trait im just going to have to master?

3) high speed wobble, anything above 90 on the rear seems to wobble like crazy, not really arsed about correcting this as i want slow wheelies, more intrested to see if somebody could give me a technical explanation as to why it happens?

4) ive seen videos of people getting their knee down no handed! bit of research seems to say that they are fiddling with their idle settings so they have like a really high idle speed to keep the gas on without throttle movement! Can i do this on the storm? is it possible without having to screw about every time getting the settings right?

sorry for the long winded post!

Same here, ive not noticed any but have heard reports on the aus forums about it.... an oily air filter doesnt sound good!

Me neither, not good ones anyway, i seem to just get about a foot of air no matter how far over the front i am, that does suck!

thanks for the wheelie advice, its not so much how to pull them, i mastered that, it just how to keep them slow, ie:sub 30, hence my questions on dragging the rear? although from my reading tonight it seems a HUGE rear sprocket might be the way to pull these nicely.

chris... yes my bikes been ABUSED! however considering the trips she done, 3 winters thru snow and ice, multiple stunts, two drops, several near misses and thousands of miles up and down the m1 i think shes done very well! Forgot to mention the kill count so far:

2X pigeons
1X sparrow
1x fox
1X school boy (long story)
2X rabbits

gotta love living in the country, plays havoc with your fairings tho!

I really worry about you sometimes dude!

LOL, the schoolboy ran out infront of me at a zebra crossing, i was doing about 20, ran over both his legs, shat myself. stopped bike and traffic and the little sh1t just ran off! I didnt know what to do but the people at the bus stop assured me there was nothing i could of done and as the kid had just ran off again there wasnt much i could do! It shook me up something cronic tho!

Its the wildlife that annoys me, i have two big holes in my fairings thanks to them!

anyway back on topic..... lol

Squiffy, your bike sounds just as bad as mine at the moment. :)

I only sometimes get a small amount or film of oil in the airbox, nothing to worry about to be honest.

Mines has always been the same with the rear wheel wobble at high speeds, something i have got use to but a decent shock should cure this. :)

If you want to create slow speed wheelies, then a larger rear sprocket is needed otherwise its alot of rear brake control needed.

I went 2 down on the front and 5 up on the rear before i wore it out, the sprocket was the size of a dinner plate but for some strange reason you dont get alot of milage out of the bigger rear sprockets as they seem to wear easily so keep an eye on the teeth, as in the past i have heard the chain jump and its not pleasant. :)
Just remember you will loose a little top end speed and your speedo may be out a little on speed.

No hand knee downs can be done so easily on a 4 pot with a little choke but cant really be done on a VTR, so with a little modification and a longer adjuster connected to the carbs idle speed, you can turn up a little when required. Just try to use a little marker or indicator so that you can turn back down to the correct place as you dont want to drop under 1k revs and stall. :)

Thanks for the reply beast :-)

decent rear shock....damm! Guess ill just get used to it then! The only thing i did find useful was that you can use the wobble to kinda steer the mono when on dual carriageways!

I changed the sprockets ages ago, went 1 down on the front an 4 up on the rear! when i said large sprocket, the guys on the stunting forums seem to use 55+ teeth on custom sprockets!! They say this is how they can get the 10mph monos with ease?? Not really noticed mine wearing any quicker, are you sure thats not chain related?

Love that mod idea, that sounds relatively easy to! I never knew they did it with just a little coke, i thought it was idle settings! Im going to look into doing that when i get the bike back, do you think this will cause any engine problems at all? i dont want to break yet another one lol!

My mate did surgest a sucide throttle i can turn on and off but this sounds a little more dangerous and more likelly to get me rogered by the fuzz!

I wouldnt use the wobble to steer... :?

55+ teeth sprockets sounds about right, can't remember what i have on my ZXR750... something similar, will have to take a pic as it is the size of a dinner plate. :)
The wear could be down to the chain, maybe not enough chain lube from time to time. ;)

The mod is easy to do, once again my old stunt bike ZXR works perfectly on choke to do a few tricks, runs at a nice rich mixture to keep the revs just about right and high.

Suicide throttle sounds a little too much for me and a tad dangerous.

LOL @ chain lube, try living on a farm where i do.... i think north sea sludge would be more protective lol!

Well ive orded a new sprocket with an extra 4 teeth so that should make things intresting! I cant really get a propper stunting one as i use the bike to commute and the drastically reduced top end would be annoying on motorways!

ZXR>.....ARHHHHHH i was looking at one of these for a stunt bike (ZXR750H) but found it REALLY heavy, im sure with a bit of re-gearing it wouldnt be too bad but would love to hear your views! Problem for me is i cant buy the bike till ive found a decent place to use it!

Do you have any pics/videos of your stunting????

and yes, your so right about the throttle...how to die in ten easy steps lol!

thanks for all the help!

I would have said your problem is not the bigger rear sprocket but the fact you went down two teeth on the front sprocket making the chain turn in a much smaller radius than with the standard front sprocket, which caused rapid chain wear, (on top of all the extra load being put on it from lifting the front etc) IMO it was the worn out chain that caused the rear sprocket to wear out :!:
