Well I got mine 2 days ago in the post aswell and watched it last night! PLAY should be doing a discount to VTR riders :) Great great movie. Hopkins was superb. Imagine casting your own pistons in what looked like a bean can :) Highly recommended. (The movie, that is, not the piston thing... :))

***WARNING*** Spoiler

Reference the story of Kim Newcombe - it evoked my own memories of Kim's last race.

I should of course introduce myself. My name is Fred Clarke, and along with my collegue at the time, Eddie Dow, were the circuit commentators at that Silverstone meeting in 1973, when Kim so sadly lost his life.

Eddie has been retired from circuit commentating for some years now, but I am still behind 'the mike' and have just completed my 38th year!!!!!!!!!

On that fateful day at Silverstone, Eddie was the No1 commentator, being situated at the start/finish area, whilst I was at the furter most point at Stowe Corner. (As you are probably aware, it was at Stowe Corner that Kim had his accident, and despite it being some 33 years ago, I can still recall the incident.).

I don't remember what lap it was on, but I clearly remember relating the whole incident over the Public Address as it happened in front of me. I recall saying words to the effect that,'Kim Newcombe on the Konig has a problem here at Stowe, he's overshot the corner.(Stowe Corner in those days being a very wide 90mph right hander, that followed on from the high speed Hanger Straight, but did have a vast amount of safety run off concrete on the outside of the corner itself. This run off being lined along its outer perimeter with vertical block wall).

I further recall talking through the final moments, as Kim thus took a very wide line, effectively off the track but still on the concrete run off area, and describing how he was still travelling at speed, but appeared to have the situation under control,( despite being cranked over and very close to the wall. In fact it looked as if he was having to lay the machine over to an almost impossible angle, such, that he had his right foot off the peg as a stabaliser, as I recall).

BUT, just as Kim and the Konig were about to rejoin the track as I thought, for whatever reason I know not, the bike went into a highside situation, threw Kim into the wall, and followed him in.

It really was so tragic. Having done everything right to get the situation under control, and I must admit I thought he had gotten away with it, it all went so tragically wrong in that final split second.

Kim Newcombe was a brilliant racer, and despite only having got to know him that Silverstone weekend, I know I speak for Eddie Dow, as well as myself, when I say," We were proud to have known him."
