FIRST TRACK DAY report !!

Post by robbie.111 »

Hello guys .....

Well yesterday was the first time out on my storm at Snetterton , pity really the weather was crap ,but I was very surprised at the way it pulled ......
I did doubt that he would hold its own to a point with the other stuff you find at track days but it was there with the majority, to be honest I was done a lot on the twisties BUT I was running road tyres and most of the bikes there yesterday were running full wets !!
But on the straight the storm pulled like a train and I had the drop on a lot of other sport stuff coming out of sear corner onto Rivett straight ...
I was able to get the power down a lot quicker then they could ! TORQUE is a lovely thing !

To give you an idea , I went with my son(ZX636R) and my mate again (ZX636R)
Now I can`t live with my son he`s a bit good , but my mate and I have about the same ability......
But I have to say he is well gutted !, we came in after the first good session and he said I can`t compete with that , you had the drop on me every time powering out of the corner where I had to get the bike up asap to put the power on , and as it came in you were gone !!
He said the only place he was catching me was at the bottom of rivett straight ,but he had to brake harder to go into the S`s , where as I was in and out before he could do anything !.....
It took my son two laps to get bye and that was in the wet ! , but once he did he was away , I`m 23 years older than him !, and he has more bottle !!!..
Really looking forward to doing another one asap but hopefully in the dry , that way I can hit the twisties harder and faster , that will be good test as an overall idea to tracking a storm ...

Sweet... glad you like the storm on the track, the Torque as you say when it kicks in you're gone.. I got rid of my chicken strips first time at knockhill. last year on BT002s a great track tire good on a dry road too but longevity was not their forte..you didn't say wether your lad was on wets or road tyres..
ive only ever ridden knockhill..might look into a couple of northern english ones this year..wife permitting..

Sounds like you had a great day apart from the weather. Is the storm running a standard set up or have you tricked it up any?
If it ain't broke, fiddle with it!

Hello boys ...

No my son was running supercorsas as was danny my mate ,and I had D207`s but we all use tyres warmers as a matter of course ..
Having said that the track temp was cold so they did cool off quite quickly I guess ..
What I didn`t mention before was on the first session I had a little moment with the back end stepping out a little and the front going light and twitchy when powering full on out of the corners...
Fortunately the ohlins man was there so I got him to check it out ! , he said that the springs and sag were good ,but the front damping wasn`t right ...
He showed us what the problem was by bouncing on the front end and watching the bike rise and chatter at the top before settling down again ...
So a few turns here and there on the front and rear and he said take it out ..
Well it made all the difference the front was steady as a rock under hard accelarating out the corners now !! , £40 well spent ,and he said the harder you push it the better it will work ! , roll on the dry season ! ...

My storm is running standard engine , but I do have a 6mm spacer at the rear and Maxton fork internals / Maxton rear shock , apart from that its standard ...
Got some slicks to put on next time out if its dry and I might go one less on the front depending where we go next !

Cheers
Rob

Glad to hear you enjoyed/ survived Snetterton Robbie

Now, if you are serious about trackdays you owe it to yourself to get a spare set of wheels and some race wets
Did Oulton a while back in torrential rain and it was honestly the best trackday I've ever done
Those things are fantastic -my face hurt I was smiling so much
I've got an inferiority complex
But its not a very good one!

Hello Ben ...
Funny you say that , a guy in our pit garage fitted some there to his cbr RR 600 and when he came back in after his session he said the grip was amazing , like it was bone dry, but it was soaking wet out there !
I will certainly consider some , but I need to sorce some wheels first ..

Looking to try and fit a quick action throttle if I can find one or a spacer to fit the storm ?

Cheers
