Speedo Issue

Hi!

I passed my test 12 days ago, and proceeded to buy a 2nd hand 'Storm on t'ebay 3 days later.

Been on it every day, takin it easy, out with mah bud (who gave me the impetous to get my license, by rolling up to my door on a gixer 1000!) basically learning to really ride...

The bike has a few issues, one of which is the speedo, odometer and trip reading. Its all stopped working.

Now ive done some homework, read the manual, checked out most of the forums regarding this.

I checked the voltage on the sensor while it was connected to battery. It was showing a constant 4.9V.

I removed the sendor, cleaned it, and tried to imitate something metal passing by it, i.e. a spanner, to see if the voltage fluctuated. It didnt, so i guess the sensors gubbed? If it is a breaker was chargin 30 quid + vat + pp.

On another note.. If its that easy to stop miles counting up on the odometer.. whose to say that a good % of 2nd hand storms, or any bikes with similar methods have very inaccurate mileage readings?

My bike could also use some new brake pads, can anyone recommend some decent ones?

This is my 1st bike, so any help, tips, advice would be tremendous.

P.s. after readin the horror stories of the CCT problem, i shat it today when i realised my bike was making a rattling sound at around 3k revs, my mate had a chuckle to himself as he pointed out the rattling pillion foot rest which seems to get tickled by the can at 3k revs .

EBC brake pads are ok but you can get plenty of others which work too(Bendics, SBK and so on) as long as you get double H stintered pads you'll be fine.
I'll bet quite a few bikes have the wrong mileage on them what I want to know is ...if you swap the leads to the sensor will you bike get newer the more you ride it

Check the 12V feed to the rear of the speedo. I had issues with mine it was a slightly corroded connection. 2 mins with some emery cloth had it sorted.

A spanner wouldn't do much, you need something magnetic.....

Well, the sensor i had in my hands today, was certainly behaving like a magnet, kept drawing the spanner to it.

I assumed the sensor part was magnetic, and it detected a bit of metal in the engine that was going round n round.

I had probs with my speedo not working which turned out to be water in the elec cables that feed the speedo. I eventually found out what the problem was when I took the fairing off removed the speedo head and when the cables dangled down half a pint of water ran out of the cable sleeve!

What was happening was that the sleeve happened to be facing forward and when it rained guided the water down to a cable connector and shorted the feed to the speedo. When I took the connector apart it was corroded and green so it had been happening for a while.

I cleaned up the connectors, smothered them with silicon grease and put everything back together. Been fine ever since.

I did wonder if mine was a one off but it would be worth having a look at yours.
