DVLA are doing hpi checks for £3 by text message.

Just text the registration number to 83600 and wait for the reply. So i gave it a go, Took no more than 30 seconds to get the reply. You get 2 messages back, the first contains, make model, Vin(last 4 digits only), date of first reg, number of owners, colour, if it stolen or scrapped. In the second message if gives details of of insurance claims.
Its the way ahead.

Here's the reply I got,

1st text message was,

SUZUKI GSX R750
VIN***1426 APR05
2 OWNERS
NO COLOUR CHANGES
NOT STOLEN
NOT SCRAPPED
HELP 08456123678

2nd text message was,

WE HAVE NO RECORD ON DN05 *** (REMOVED BY ME) BEING SUBJECT TO A TOTAL LOSS CLAIM BY INSURERS
