cct

Post by bobbyball »

need an answer to a cct problem, think one of mine might have gone,
had the bike from new now 23,000+ miles
made a noise about 2-3 months ago then stopped, started again last week
only do,s it for a few seconds then stops. sounds like a slight blowing exhaust. by the time I get home for a proper listen theres no noise.
going to change it
rather than take the thing apart (cam covers) to get the piston on the compression stroke, why can,t I remove one spark plug, loosen the other then I should be able to feel and hear when the relivent piston is coming up for compression. on the rt mark for front. etc.

Yep you can do that but I would recomend taking both the plugs out so it will turn over easier and one fo the cam covers so you know it's on the compression stroke.
The problem is if you have the cam lobes facing in the wrong direction the valve springs will cause the cam shaft to turn on its own as soon as the cct is removed. When on the proper stroke the cam lobes don't move from the pressure of the valve springs.

thanks for the speedy reply,
correct me if I,m wrong, by removing the rear plug it effectivly becomes a single cylinder, by rotating the engine past the RT mark anticlockwise
(the direction it normally runs ?). It must be either on the exaust stroke or the compression stroke, I should be able to identify the compression stroke by the resistance.( there will be no resistance on the exaust stroke). Is this right or have I got it all wrong??
mines an 02 storm big tank, theres no way of turning off the petrol,no tap
and the tanks full. took me ages to drain down last time (diagfram).

Yep that should work.
Personally I'd stil remove the rear cover, cause it's easy and I like to see the alignment to be sure and then you can work out the front position with out guessing.
But that's just the way I am

Hi Bobby,

I'm with Pete on this one, I still think it's worth removing the rear cam cover.

You mentioned about draining the petrol from your tank last time, as there's no way of turning off the petrol with no tap. I would have thought that providing the diaphgram is in good condition the petrol should not escape from the tank anyway.

This may be of use to you if you've not already seen it :!:

dont need to drain the tank there is a tap on the fuel outlet at the back of the tank. just remember to turn it back on again when re fitting. emptying only serves one purpose , to make tank lighter to move, why not wait until you are low on fuel before you do them???

follow Petes instructions on the sticky and you will have it done in a copule of hours and right!! believe me I wouldnt hesitate doing it again but was worried before I printed out the way.

thanks for the help, changed the cct, took the cam cover off just to make sure I was guessing right (I was). There did,nt seem to be anything wrong with the cct's. Changed them anyway. haven't had any noises since (touch wood). Done about 150 miles. no way to turn off petrol on f2 model took tank off with diagram attached. thanks again
happy new year
