Emmigrating calling all Aussie and Kiwi ex pats

Post by Beamish »

Me and the missus are seriously thinking about leaving old blighty at the end of my RAF engagement. We like the look of both Australia and New Zealand any inside info would be greatly appreciated and whats it like to live there now you have settled.
I am an Aeronautical Engineer (plane mechanic really)
Missus is a Veterinary Surgeon
Do you need a certain amount of cash in the bank and what ages are they interested in?
I know the official sites will give info but personal experiences are far more valuable to me.

Just steal some loaves of bread or something, they'll send you for free :)

Good luck mate
think you'll find a well qualified couple like yerselves will be welcomed with open arms by either of those Countries, almost regardless of yer financial status.
Me & and about 44 million others would love to join ya - if only we weren't so old n useless. Never mind, I'll just stand here another 15 years or so holding the door open for waves of 'guaranteed new Labour-voting' immigrants while me teeth rot & me pension devalues

hope that ain't too political for a bike forum

Australia is by far the better choice. We have vowels here. And sun.

Larry might be able to give you some work advice. He's a QANTAS insider along similar lines to your good self. I know your wife won't have any trouble getting work (my cat had a nice dose of vet-induced stress just yesterday).

As far as what Those That Be are looking for goes, I'd have to google it, so you can do that y'self.

If you do get closer to making a decision to move here, I shall make it my duty at your fellow Stormer to teach you to speak real Aussie. You'll also need to at least make an effort to ditch that pommy accent or everyone'll write you off as a snob. The snob-factor may help your wife in her work, but I'm not sure how it'd go down with a bunch of grease-monkeys...

Either way, anything I can help with, let me know.

All very well & good there, Timbo, m'good man, but most of us have never heard of half of that. It's like learning a different language at school. They teach you to say phrases that you'd never actually hear in everyday life.

Yes, we do say g'day mate, but I've yet to hear anyone use the term "bonza" for example, other than to take the mickey out of foreigners ;)

Most of what the world deems "Aussie slang" is utter baldrocks (not a term we do actually use... just one I've picked up from here, oh, and from watching The Young Ones many moons ago).

Not sure why I'm posting this. I'm tired. My eyes sting.
