Side stand question

Post by redun »

Hello

I've recently bought a shiny red 98 firestorm and after cleaning it for the first time today (too windy to ride!) I noticed the side stand doesn't really look that stable.

Has anyone else noticed this? If you put pressure on the bike when it's on the stand, it looks like it almost flexes and i'm worried it might snap or something. I've owned other Honda's and never really noticed this before.

Mine got bent to sh1t whilst being moved in a van, had to remove and restraighten, very week and poor .

I would have thought that Honda would have made monting points for a centre that you could use and remove when finished .

Hi Dan,
cant say i've noticed, but will have a look tomorrow.
I do find the sidestand holds the bike just a wee bit too vertical for my liking, depending where it's parked.

Same as, I have a paving slab set down an inch lower than the rest outside my house for that reason.

Never noticed mine bending though, maybe yours has been bent before and straightened causing the weakness?

Thanks for the quick replies :D

I didn't even notice that you can't add a centre stand either! Honda are usually too tight to include it standard but thought they left the option of adding one later.

Reckon I'll have to get a paddock stand to be on the safe stand - err side

I havnt really looked at it properly, but if it was worrying you, take it off, into engineers/welders,they could probably weld a bit of steel rod down the length of it to strengthen it :!:

Mine's the same and always has been, so I wouldn't worry about it.

Many a FireStorm has fallen over (inc my old one) due to this hopeless excuse for a stand! I ended up welding a washer to it to spread the load due to increased surface area!
If you think your bike is too vertical and haven't yet got the 4.5mm rear suspension raiser mod fitted you can try that. Not only improves the turn in of the bike but also increases the lean slightly when on its stand to give a better three point support (two tyres and stand  )

If you think your bike is too vertical
- you should have a TDM as well - that is so upright and the sidestand doesn't project forwards enough that on any slight downward incline it will try to roll forwards. It has a centre stand, but pulling it up on a downhill incline is a challenge!
