I agree. In fact, when we were in that area last month, the local bike police were pulling bikes (us included) over and giving us all a safety pep talk. When you see these sort of antics though you can see why.

Our little club is comprised of seasoned riders who have all done IAM etc. We aren't slow by any means, but don't have these "moments" either. I remember a couple of years ago, going over to Wales on a twisty bit somewhere. Some local nob on an SP1 decided he just had to get past to prove his manhood to his girlfriend who was parked precariously on the back wearing jeans and a top that left most of her midriff exposed. His overtaking was diabolical.

These days, if someone wants to be a nob I let them go past, until I catch them in the twisties and perform a Rossi/Stoner type manouevre (I wish!)

I know what you mean about the number of accidents, I think the same some times

Then I turn it around and as long as there is all those nutters out there giving us a bad name it's more likely they will be one of the ones becoming a statistic and not me.
So in my view that makes biking safer for those that ride sensibly.

Often think about this Mike. The racer guy i know, refuses to use a bike outside of racing, as its so dangerous. No cars coming out of junctions, or veering into your lane in Superstock..

Ive yet to have a "close one" but thats probably due to lack of road time. When i do, and its probably inevitable, i'll no doubt weigh up the pros and cons. I have to admit though, its something i really enjoy, so i'll just continue being careful, and enjoy it even more.

Too true. I'm only 23 so some would probably judge me to be irresponsible but I only go as fast as I am comfortable with, not trying to catch up and play everything safe. I don't want to be one of the statistics.

I also think that some kind of restriction needs to be placed on new riders and what bikes they can have. A friend of mine bought a gsxr1000 after riding a blade for 2.5 years and just couldnt control it and binned it after 4 days.

In our little group I persistently see one member who seems to feel the need to catch up with everyone. He'll overtake just because the person in front has, presuming it will be safe to do so.

Thing is, you mention it and they won't listen to the simplest advice! Grips my sh:t!

Glad to hear you're OK Mike.

Seen a lot of Richard about on SM's doing similar antics, thankfully not to me else

A) I'd be changing underwear

B) Think I'd tail them and have a courteous discussion about bike etiquette when they stopped

Trouble is, certainly round W Yorks, and probably elsewhere, a lot of All or Nothing race bike owners have come too close to losing their licenses and sold to buy SM's or keep race bike for tracking.
There's a few live not too far from me and they blatt about the village like it's a super motard track!

Yes Tim, you're right, the 'Matlock Incident' (although we never actually got there), was caused by someone riding very fast, probably beyond their ability, wrong side of road numerous times inc blind bend!
Thankfully, although I wouldn't wish it on anyone, he only took himself out, it could have been much much worse.
Unfortunately, as I'm led to believe, he now has an even faster prod bike, with quick shift, to compensate for the bottom half of his left leg not being there anymore!

No matter where you go or what bike you ride, there's always other road users to consider, whether it be 2 or 4 wheels or a dirty great big farm vehicle.
Consider them all a potential threat and you won't go far wrong.

+1 to that....I work on the assumption that everyone else is out to get me and ride accordingly.
When I feel the need to 'let loose' a little I tend to get up early on a Sunday before the numpties are out

Attended a funeral on Thursday for one of our experienced guys who lost it on a round-about last week. Rode home with another OzFS member who did about a 30m slide in front of me about 700km from home. Finally made it home late last night to discover two other members had come off in the last couple of days!

It's a world-wide epidemic!

There will always be death and Richard on the roads until vehicles are controlled by computers. Its in our DNA, lapses of concentration or moments of sheer madness are just facts of life. Experience teaches us that we are not exempt from paralizing injuries or death and that slows us down. I am not speaking for all members but how many used to drive/ride like a Richard when they were 18? How many have sat passenger with there wifes/husbands and thought she/he hasn't even seen that hazard, she/he is too busy gassing

as the traffic increases it will become the biggest cause of death/injury in the UK.
Mike I totally agree with you I had a superduke undertake me when I was fully commited into a bend on the Storm, could have fookin killed him or him me.

No wayyyyyy!! My computer breaks down more than I do. I'd hate to be in a vehicle controlled by one. And anyway, you'd have to buy a new car every week or it will no longer be compatible with the roads, or other car computers, or traffic light computers, or whatever.

You trust aeroplanes though! Most would fall out of the sky if the main FCCs failed
