Rant: Bloody gravel on the roads...
I thought it was just the road outside my house that they done that to. Council done it about 10 months ago, weeks of having 6 inch deep piles of gravel at the side of the road. The whole road has since fell to bits and is in a worse condition now than before the "fixed" it. Their coming back soon to do it all again. Council tax is being well spent I see

There are a couple of far better methods around. One local road had a thin layer of lovely grippy mix laid over the top which smoothed out the bumps and seems really hard wearing.
The other is a nifty machine that breaks up a couple of inches of old road surface and mixes it with some fresh bitumen and re-lays it all in one go. Which means you don't need a load of wagons and a digger to remove the old and bring in new aggregate.
Also when I was working in Cardiff in the early 90's they were trialing a porous tarmac on a section west of Cardiff on the M4. You could be barreling along in torrential rain with little or no visibility when you would hit the porous stuff and..... no spray. Not a drop. A truly fantastic bit of technology.
But we all know where the budget for traffic goes don't we.
