which sat nav mount

Post by doggit »

hey, i have a mio sat nav which is now unlocked, and have tomtom & IGO 8 on an SD card, and was wondering what mounts will fit on my bike, i have standard bars on the bike, but not sure how to mount, was looking at those RAM mounts but dont seem to have much space i thought may be on the mirror stems, if any one of you have sat nav on the bike can you tell me what mounts you use, at present it goes in tank bag, but would like to see the screen too.

i've seen a ram unit mounted on the stearing stem top nut, the guy had drilled and tapped it to suit the thread in the ball joint mount.
also ram do a clamp that replaces your existing clutch lever assembly clamp back plate, but i think this would put to much wind vibration straight to the bars and also the unit would clash with the fairing, but its one of the ones listed for a storm as a fitment option.

Hi matey,

I bought Zumo 550 which comes with 2 RAM mounting options as standard, one on a 'U' bolt, the other which replaces the rear clutch clamp bracket.

On the Storm, the 'U' bolt option is pretty much no good, however, I did initially use the clutch clamp option with no snagging on fairing etc. It was pretty visible while riding too.
However, when I fitted Baglux tank bag to the tank cover I found it got in the way of full lock and was hardly visible for the bag.

I rang RAM UK to ask about fittings and they suggested Telferizer for Yoke mount, over their own version!

Try him, he's just round the corner from you too.

I also ended up buying 7 1/2" extenstion arm and 'butt plug' from RAM so I can also use it with bag fully expanded or my twin zip together ones when touring.

Not cheap, but very good.

Graeme.

thanks guys, i just had a look at Telferizer and looks like it might be the way forward, although i will have a think about trying to mount on the screen just above the clocks, i will have to try and get an angle bracket, so the nav will be level, but will get in touch with that guy who is only in stockport and see what he will do for me, and just to go slightly go off topic, if i wire in the femail end of a ciggy lighter into the battery so i can run the nav on power, can i just wire straight from the battery or do i have to put some sort of breaker in sorry to sound stupid but not sure with electrics

I intend at some point to add an auxilliary 'fuse box' with both switched and un-switched feeds via a relay.

There are a few purpose built units for this, but they're also not cheap for a good, waterproof / protected versatile unit.

Reason for this?

Optimate lead, Zumo lead, heated gloves/jacket lead, mobile charger etc.

There's a limit to how many ring terminals a battery will take

For now all I have wired direct to battery is the Optimate lead and a 'cigar' lighter socket. The latter has an inline fuse but that's it.

I use this for powering mobile phone charger and the Zumo when in use.

An alternative mounting for your SatNav which I think you've mentioned, would be to make a mounting bracket that fastens between the existing mirror mounting bolts. This is OK as long as you make sure you can see your clocks and warning lamps ie oil pressure light etc.

A good place to find info for a wide range of makes and models of GPS (SatNavs) is http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Forums
You'll find lots of info including powering and mounting options.

well i e mailed a guy called bob at http://www.telferizer.co.uk/ and he phoned me up about 20 mins later, and now he has sorted me out with the mount shown in his web site, and as i live 4 miles from him he said to call round 2moro and he is gona fit and check it out for me, the total cost of the ball that sits on the head stock nut and some of those ram connectors is £55 so now just to wire in now, so all sorted, will take a piccy of the finished thing and post here to show you all 2moro,
