So is that parts 11 and 6 or 14 and 8?

Which bearings did you end up replacing?

11 and 6 and obviously new parts to replace them along with new bearings and seals to suit. Didn't get to see the interior when it was taken apart as it was at the shop but presumably to get in that state all the lubrication must have completely dried out.

14 and 8 were amazingly fine - just needed a bit of ultra fine wet and dry on the bolt shaft and regreased thoroughly before reassembling. Bearings were fine and still in factory? lube.

If yours went as well, then with albeit a small sample, we might have identified the suspension components that are prone to corrode and need keeping a close eye on, especially if, like mine, the bike's ridden all year round.

Aye spacer number 6 is the offending item on mine, but thankfully nowhere near as bad.

Sirch had no 5 / 20 well the dog bone (tie bar) split, so the whole assembly went really 8O.

Only decided to check mine as a spur o' the moment thing really, seeing as I already had rear wheel out for new tyre and finally fit the new cush drive rubbers. Obviously, this post and others recently also planted the thought to check.

My bike mechanic bro being the only previous owner, I wasn't sure whether they'd already been done at some time in the last 10 years or not. As it turns out he had done them, as the bolts holding everything together had been copper slipped and not by me. Bugger had also polished the tie bar! Why?! Anyway, spent a bit of time polishing that back up too. Still a few pits on it, will get them out if I have time.

Glad I checked though, plenty of grease in all bearings still but bad scoring on spacer 6.
Thankfully got lots of spare bits from scrapper I bought which will, eventually be my project. The suspension linkage will change to take VFR SS swingarm, so that whole arm sub assembly (7) will be redundant.

Took it to a local garage with small bead blaster today to get it cleaned up ready for spraying and asked them to fit a grease nipple while they were at it. Hopefully should get it back tomorrow. What I should have done with hindsight was take the spare tie bar for grease nipple fitting too. No more buggering about.

Chain got a good clean in paraffin last night, rear brake bled, rear caliper going to get a good clean up tomorrow.

Need to get the thing out of the garage so it can get a right good power wash - after a wet week in IOM it looks like it's done a Scottish 6 day trial! All front of engine is grey with mud :?

I'll have to get some more piccies to post as I go along.

Thanks Wicki for your insight; I'm doing my linkages today. All popped out fine but for (surprise surprise) very stubborn git No.11 - that can wait until the FA cup is over.

Looking at the date I started that threadI should have it apart again to check my handiwork.

Especially since the Storm is not critical for day-to-day use as I'm cycling a lot more to unblock bacon sernie clogged arteries! In fact today I got the train to the coast to work with the pushbike and cycled along the sea-front 6 miles into Clacton-on-Sea into a headwind when I was overtaken by a cheery fat bloke on a mobility scooter with 'Where's the pub' on the front. Could have been a view of my future....
It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

Finally aquired the 2 parts for this job. Will be cleaning, sanding & painting them. They will be fitted with 6mm grease nipples & over the winter I will fit them.

I'd suggest you also fit the rubber covers for the nipples, same as on the brake bleed points.

Nobody likes a filthy, dirty nipple.

(Might need a second opinion on that one......) :rolleyes3:
