Don't have any tips for ya mate but it does sound similar to what I get (Spinal Spondylosis), if a bit more severe...

http://www.patient.co.uk/showdoc/23068700/

For me, the neck exercises work quite well when I can remember to do em. I also think it was originally caused by me working on a laptop at a desk for a few years. I switched to a desktop and now a laptop with an external monitor and am a lot more concious of my posture when I'm working.

As far as bikes are concerned, when I switched to supermotos a few years back I found I got on with the riding position better than on bikes like the VTR. When I've since tried out sportsbikes (GSXR, Mille to name a couple) I just couldn't wait to get off them as the riding position was an instrument of torture for me, particularly having to almost look upwards to see where you're going. Maybe a change in riding position might help you?

i had pretty much the same and it comes back with vengeance if i sit in certain positions while at my PC...
worst it ever got i wasn't even able to lift my arm to open a door with out been in agonising pain..

are you getting shooting pains down your arm to your fingers?
pins n needles or similar pains in your fingers or joints.

as mentioned neck exercises work wonders,, hurts like wombles to do but no pain no gain... roll your head roundslowly in full circles so your chin touches your chest then cheek on the shoulder and then head right back then other cheek on other shoulder.... do it in both directions..

and the effected arm,
do shoulder rotations, but hold your arm as if you were resting it on an armrest. so your forearm is at right angles to the upper arm. hold the elbow in so its touching your ribs then slowly rotate your shoulder joint, but make a mental point not to use your arm to rotate the shoulder.

what you might find if you rotate it very very very slowly you will reach the 12 oclock point on the shoulder rotation and on the way down it will drop or not continue in a perfect circle.

this is some thing to do with the muscles and possibly the ones causing your pain.....

this could all be a waste of time as it might be totaly different to what i had but your description sounds oh so familiar.

doing the above exercises regularly every day mine started to ease up after about 3 or 4 days.. but nearly 3 to 4 weeks before it was totaly gone.

Like others said - grit your teeth and keep moving the joints, only time will sort it out. I had a herniated disc a few months back and found taking anti-inflammatories (like Naproxen) helped a bit. Get wrist/arm rests for using your computer and make sure your monitor is at the right height! Maybe get a Harley for that laid-back riding posture... :)

Tim, a hot water bottle placed where the pain is should help ease it, especially at night times :!: Problems like that are always worse at night, or feel like it anyway. I hope you get well soon :!:

Sounds grim Timbo mate, two solutions and neither are very big or clever.

1. Smoke a Joint
2. Drink Stella/ Theakstons Black sheep till you cant remember what part of your body used to hurt.

Pay good money for good treatment.

try a dunlopillo (pillow), should help you sleep. If not you've always got the Vodka option to fall back on....

its probably a version of carpel tunnel syndrome.
i first got it from playing pc games at home and my job was sitting at a pc..

it was caused by not been in the best of positions while on the pcs,, and continously bashing buttons while in this position.
the bugger is it takes a while for it to get to the stage your at but it suddenly comes out the blue and takes even longer to put right.

there is nothing the docs or other $$$$ forms of treatment will help.

just do the exercises i suggested regularly, and it will hurt like hell to start with just keep it up and after 3 or 4 days you should notice it start to ease up...

if you do take any pain killers Dont go near a PC while on them...
will more than likely make it even worse...
i found this out the first time it happend as i was always popping in zee battle cruiser for a britney spears or 2 on the way home from work..
masking the pain and then gaming all night..

Stalk me? hmmmmmmmm we'll see.

Sorry to hear you're a bit crook mate - should still be able to twirl a spanner or two though.

TBH I'm not a popper of pills or any other meds if I can avoid it.

My theory right or wrong is that pain killers mask the pain so you can keep doing something which may be the cause of the problem in the first place. The idea of pain is your bodies way of telling you you've been an butt and to stop doing something (usually). Bit like Chuxsta said I suppose.

Don't get headaches very often (thankfully) but use that 4-head stuff - works brilliantly and lasts for ages (like a short fat Pritt Stick).

On the odd occaision that I do take 'em, really bad pain or extreme tooth ache, I do a cocktail of Ibuprofen & Codeine (Cocodomol etc only available over counter but without prescription). Initially take the full dose of both, then alternate between the two, 4-5 hours later. That way you can get pain relief every 2 hours or so if you need it.
Make sure it's the above 2 though or similar brand name. If in doubt ask the pharmacist they'll tell you that can mix 'em and which you can't.

Don't drive, fly, train and taxi - I know you hate it but 200 miles each way won't do you any good.

Only other suggestion would be to get a good quality memory foam mattress, pillow optional - avoid Netto, Lidl, Aldi et al.

From new, our bloody expensive, no roll etc etc mattress was OK, but we both suffered cricked neck, arms etc occaisionally. When it was time to renew we went for a memory foam one after trying a few different makes, thicknesses etc out in one or two shops (No not like that you pervs!).
Ended up buying one online with pillows; take a bit of getting used to the pillows do, I love mine now, she still has traditional one.
Neither of us have suffered from any sleep related aches or pains since!

Sympathies Timbo, this whole mobile workforce thing and laptops in particular are the cause of numerous ailments.

I too ended up with neck problems and now use a laptop stand http://www.laptopstuff.co.uk/p/Coolstan ... _Stand.htm with a lightweight keyboard and bluetooth mouse. Still very portable and I don't get the pain and medical bills.
