Perhaps the mags do speed tests using two way average figures and accurate measuring equipment to get their 143 mph, instead of (notoriously innacurate) speedo readings going down hill with the wind behind you? Even GPS figures are only one way momentary maximums.

Speedos are allowed a maximum error of +10%, so an indicated 160 is possibly reading 16mph over.

160-16=144...close enough for me.

Sweet ride mate. Fairing looks the part on your bike, but what has me intrigued is the pillion handle. Where do we get one of those?

d&s,

I've got one on mine. It's made by Renntec in the UK. Makes riding on the back of the storm more comfortable, so I'm told, it's not like I'm getting on the back :D I got my parents to pick me one up while they were in the UK, a few months ago. But all you have to do is jump on their website and order one. I guess the UK guys would know if there is a cheaper place to get them though :?:
Don't know if there is an importer in Australia, but I've seen them on the back of a few bikes.

If I can get my digital camera working I'll take a few pics of my beasty and post them for you, and it's easy to install. If I could do it any one can  and I only used the hammer twice :D
My other job is navigator on an Intergalactic
Spice Freighter

Red (of course) 99 storm. Vance & Hines SS2 cans, Dynajet kit and K&N filter.

Grabrail

Post by duzzy »

Yep it's a renntec one, as it happens I had one on the bike when it came and the guy I bought my spare OEM cans from sent me another brand new unfitted renntec grabrail one with all the bits.

You pay the postage it's yours.

Well, magazines using GPS and dataloggers for speed readings. And only simple GPSs can track momentary maximum - you simply turn on ride logging in TomTom Navigator on pocket PC and you can see how you ride went, including stopovers etc.
If I see 240+ kph I see it afterwards, even to check if I was not mistaken. GPS readings of speed must be accurate, at least devices used by magazines (dataloggers) are not more accurate than bicycle computer when it has been tuned in properly (measured lenght of ciscle on which you install magnet and lenght of circle of wheel).
I think that magazines often getting their figures of top speed from dynos (properly measured on dyno should include aero drag coefficient, which I guess they take out of bluea), or perhaps most of testers just quit accelerating when it seems to stop really pulling.
I did see 220+ on my Hornet with both GPS and bicycle computer (BC Sigma 800 - quite accurate), while magazines insist it was 212 (? WTF) - I could not possible have been off mark by about 10 kph, no way.
Mind, it does depend on weight and size of rider ... a lot...and on posture, and on riding gear...

An indicated 205 on a busa at bruntinthorpe speed testing as the bloke who's bike it was didnt have big enough goolies.... 181 on a gsxr1000 on the m54 and not really taken the vtr to the max yet somewhere around 140 mark will be about right.

Was caught a while back on the a50 by a volvo T5 on my 2001 rsvr and this is my only speeding offence but they couldnt get an accurate speed on me so i took the 3 points and £60 fine. When i watched the video playback in the car as i said it wasnt me and to be fair i was that far in front you could only make out the colour of my leathers just and they where showing an idicated 145 inside the car before they lost sight of me...LMAO oh well live and learn. I decided to take the points rather than the judge watching the video and him deciding if it was me or not.

And for any bobbies on this site who have read this to cover my ass all of the above was allegedly

The rsv are great bikes all in all not that much better than the storm, not sure if they are worth the extra couple of grand over what my storm cost me.

Planning to get the storm to handle and stop, it goes well enough form me anyway as i'm not after silly speeds just want the grunt coming out of corners and it certaily does just that.

Get get the best from the bike you have to ride it properly and i'm certain these vtr's are not for the inexperianced rider or they will bite back.
