VOSA

Post by tony.wilde1 »

was pulled in by vosa in my truck yesterday,in hatfield herts, usual stuff, weighed, check tacho discs and then the bloke mentioned that as from early next year the "sat nav"will have to be positioned in an "unswept"area of the windscreen or you get a fixed penalty

so,ill have to squeeze the sat nav in the bottom right hand corner of the screen to where im sitting, even more distracting :?

Shouldnt even be anywhere on the windscreen IMO.

It should detect if the vehicle is moving and only provide aural directions. You can get £60 and 3 points for using a mobile but stanavs are just as distracting as dozy feckers meander along staring at them rather than the road, despite creating a nice bike sized blind spot for when the pull out of junctions.

Grrrr :x

I have to admit I'm surprised it's not the law already, you're not allowed an air freshener hanging from your rear view mirror or a sticker like a parking permit in the swept zone and any crack larger than 10mm in zone 'A' (an area 310mm wide from the centreline of the steering wheel) is a failure and 40mm in any other swept area is a failure. So why should sticking a great plastic box with light and noise thrown into the deal be any different?

Absolutely anythign that directs a drivers attention away from the road for one second is "not a good thing" (tm)

Me, I'd ban radios, cigarettes, passengers, itchy jumpers and cats too.

*sigh* rookie mistake....

You pull up and ask the hottest girl you can find where it is.

She then offers to show you. You in gratitude take her out for dinner, she invites you back to her penthouse where the rest of her Swedish nude volleyball team are staying.

Sat Navs are safer than getting the wife/partner to navigate and the inevitable full on fight that follows.
She's my idea of beauty and thats what I ride.

i agree with mike, ive had sat nav's ever since they first came out( very expensive)..to my current tom tom 510...like mikes, mines in the bottom right hand corner of the screen, well away from hands during driving..i dont go wandering over the white line cos im looking at the screen...its been invaluble finding addresses in citys 100's of miles from home, has in built speed camera's( the full range)..and a nice lady talks to me all the time :P ..ive even had em fitted to the bike, along with my autocom and mp3 player connected, so i can talk /listen to great tunes and get to where im going!! all without bad driving/riding

Have to agree with most of what Kitch has said.

I've been thinking about getting a SatNav for ages and still not taken the plunge. However I have been in plenty of vehicles with them in and working, some portable units and some built in, mates Shogun.

As Lee's just said, I think they are an invaluable aid when travelling somewhere you don't know, especially in a city or large town when looking for a specific address / post code.

IMO you shouldn't need them in between towns ie Motorways etc unless there's a closure - you should damn well have a decent enough sense of direction to get you to the town or city following the road signs! If you haven't, you shouldn't be on the road in the first place!

With regard to the positioning of them, I agree, that they should be placed so as not to cause any obstruction to view which creates blind spots. Dammit car drivers in the main, are dangerous enough without more impediments!

Having said that, I know my mates' C5 has coating on windscreen which inhibits the signal, therefore, the only place he can place it where it will work is just below / behind the rear view mirror, where there's a small, un coated area. I'm not sure, are external aerials available to get round this? as I also have C5 estate.

You should be able to follow the audible directions and warnings (speed cameras etc) without having to see the screen on the unit, even if you have John Cleese shouting them at you. If not then you haven't read or understood the instructions properly.

As for Kitch's observations relating to females in Leeds - Personally I hate the place - I've worked there for extended periods many times in the last 20 years and have also had quite a few nights out there when friends are celebrating things.

However, the fact that I can't abide the place aside, it is wall to wall totty, especially, but by no means exclusively, during Uni term time. (Fresher week is quite a sight to see especially at night!!!). I suppose quite a few commute to Leeds for their jobs etc - but wandering round the centre on a lunchtime is quite something.

Not that I take any notice of such things, being happily married - it's just what I've been told by mates - honest it is!

Graeme.

I use the same Garmin in the car and on the TDM. Can't see it is anymore distracting than glancing at the speedo/radio whatever and a damn sight safer than trying to look at a map, either in the car or on top of a tankbag. Surely something that displays speed etc in you line of sight is safer than glancing at the dashboard?
Two bikes, still only four cylinders!
