A new bike for me......

Post by VeetyR »

Hey guys,

As some of you may know i have recently been made bikeless by some lil scrote.

Anyway, I am now starting to look for another bike and I really fancy a stinky lil stroker for a bit o fun. I have seen in a couple of sigs that a few of ye own a second lil 2 stroke and i am looking for some buying advice and some "living with em" tips.

I have a few bikes in mind and i prefer slightly older tackle as i like to tinker , they are as follows : -

- Suzuki RG500( yeah right, in my fooking dreams )

being more practical(pricewise) : -

- Honda NS400R

- Kawasaki KR1-S

- Suzuki RGV250 vj21 or 22

- Honda NSR250

- Yamaha RD350

- Yamaha TDR250 or late model TZR

These are the main ones that are in reach and have always tempted me.

The main reason for this post is to find out if anyone has experienced any of the above and also if anyone has any other suggestions or advice for me :D

Lemme know eh? ...... thx john'o

P.S : would like to say i am getting another storm but i prob wont :( I will however hang about on here coz i like u guys :)

john,
glad your thinking about another bike, about time eh my friend!!

anyhow not a bad list of stinkys there, must say love em ,and still do.
had a ns400r in rothmans colours(wish i still had that)that was a quick bike and easily kept up and overtook the good ladys nc30.
worth quite alot of money now, and i swapped it for a gpz750!doh!
what was i thinking.(as good as the rd 500,and rg500 .i thought.)

kr1/kr1s .lovely bike .(i think the kr1s still holds the 250 fastest speed record)
they are quite cheap now, as you rarely get a good one.(just my thoughts)
i had a kr1 and it blew up on me within 4 weeks of haveing it.
if i remember rightly the kr1 piston ring did not have a cut out and would melt itself to the piston and bore (which was plated and you could not get it rebored!!)
so if you get the kwaka make sure it has the later rings(kr1s rings)

nsr250: i had one of those aswell kept it for about a month then part-xed it for the ns400r.
very nice looking bike went well even with my fat butt on it(110mph) (tiny tiny headlight though.)
rd350: had a couple of these, never the mint 250/350"s you see on the bay with every nut and bolt restored and costing a fortune, but never the less both good bikes (very juicy on petrol though, even more than the others)
never had a tdr250-always fancied one though.
had a old tzr250 for about 2 days but took that back as it was a bit of a shed.
my mate had a lovely tzr r/cylinder model, with the pipes comeing from under the seat.
now they are nice stinkys ,and you can pick them up cheap these days.(quick aswell.)
as for other 2 strokes i have had (lots i know!!!)they were old ones like
1 x kh250, 2 x suzi x5"s 2 x suzi x7"s

one i have not tried and fancy a go of one day is the rs aprilla 250
supposed to be very good,as the rgv 250(same engine) was good this can only be better.
choices choices...he he he
pat.
yellow all the way...
who needs 4 cylinders when 2 are this good!!

storm no more...rsv power now.
(along with 85cc of honda finest)

HAHAHA c'mon now.....i owned a storm ffs
FirestormMike wrote:After reading post was puzzled to why you would be after some of the above and not another storm ??? I reckon one could be bought similarly priced to the above, and be far better for run outs etc...

The reasoning behind it is that i was always too young to ride and appreciate the yester-year 2strokes not to mention my parents wouldnt let me sniff a bike as a youngster.....and i really feel that if i am ever going to experience one i better strike while the iron is hot before they will either A) dissapear from the roads completely or b) become too expensive to buy one.....as for run outs, i prefer A and B road tomfoolery to motorway chugging and wont be planning 100's of miles as that'll just kill it

I would consider another storm maybe in the future, but this spring i fancy the smell of synth 2T and Hanging on for dear life to bike with a mentalist powerband.

I have seen a couple of decent cheapish NS400R's for sale here http://www.ns400r.co.uk/forum/index.php ... e499d6bffa

and some good info on it here http://www.elmarie.dsl.pipex.com/

I would love an RG500 but for mintas there aint much change outa 5K and thats a bit rich.

I reckon i got a budget of £1500 - £2000....that should get me somit that'll put a grin on me face. dontchya think?

Good call Veety -ish!

I would really love a proper sorted 250 2-smoke as a track bike
Top speed down the straights doesnt do it for me -I love cornering and want something that will lean til it makes my nose bleed
But on the road? Nah, not for me

As for advice, get over to http://www.visordown.com and introduce yourself in the 2-stroke section
Just dont start looking through the posts for pics some some of the bikes in there are so pretty it hurts
I've got an inferiority complex
But its not a very good one!

ahhhhh it brings it all back...the mid 80's...had alot of 2t's back then...rgv's were the dogs danglies, fast and reliable, also had a few rd's, 250, 350 and 400...couldn't fault em, nice powerband...wouldnt have a kr1..there as brittle as feck, as mentioned above, alltho they looked ace...if i was gonna have another, it would have to be a prilla 250!!...suzuki engine so reliable and fast as feck, with supreme handling( modern style)..lets face it, old 2t's dont handle as good as u think they did...at the time we all thought they was the buisness, but compared to modern standards ..no where near...so yep prilla for me  i can smell em now 8) , anyone fancy a storm lol

Hi Veety,
I have a TZR250 2MA, modified by Stan Stevens to produce around 50bhp. Its a brilliant thing to ride and IMO very well made. Its light, so its easy to haul about in the garage and starts easilly. Had it now for 5 years and I'll never sell it.
She's my idea of beauty and thats what I ride.

My two pence worth

IMO John'o I think a little two stroke as a second bike is just about right, but as your main run about, for me I prefer a much bigger four stroke.

Things to consider if you're using the next steed as a daily commuter bike would be the amount of mileage you will be covering, as a fairly hard ridden two stroke is not going to be very good on the mpg, plus you'll be using oil as well.

But after saying that, years ago people did use small two strokes for commuting, so it's your choice really

Good luck with it,

Chris.

Timbo wrote:Oh mate, i can see why, that is really nice. They were a real piece of engineering werent they? Way ahead of their time.
Sold that in 2003 for £1350. 1993 L with 13000 on the clock. It was a minter. Kept it as standard as possible and looked after it no end. To this day (baring oil & fuel costs...) Its the best bike I’ve owned. No doubt.

Yeah, they are fickle and temperamental on occasions. But on B roads it was a complete hoot! Can remember chasing many an R1 or Blade and surprising them in the bends! Of course, they'd always have the legs on a straight! Loved the bike, the engineering, the character and the smell!!! (and the kick start!)

Oh, got to stop, otherwise I'll be selling the TL next!

WOOHOO....guys i just found this priced very reasonably.

Image

Has lots of history......rebuild 3000 miles ago...has a stan stevens yz piston ring conversion. this is what ad says : -

This bike has been my pride and joy for the last 3 years, its heartbreaking to advertise this little beaut but its time for me to upgrade to something bigger, iv had countless fun times on this RGV. The bike is in excellent Condition, Metallic Purple (Movie Star Telefonica Paint Scheme) with Polished Frame, Swing Arm and Wheel Rims, Steering Damper, Dep Exhaust Cans, Single seat unit, Tinted Screen, Braided Hoses for Front and Rear Brake Lines, Mini Numberplate & indicators, Recently New Heavy Duty D.I.D O-ring Chain Fitted and New Sprocket, good tyres all-round with a 180 wide on the back wheel. The bike is in excellent running condition and is fitted with a pair of Yamaha YZ125 single ring Wiseco racing pistons. This is one of Stan Stevens famous RGV250 conversions which gives less friction on the cylinder walls and produces a quicker rate of acceleration, Wiseco brand of pistons are also three times stronger then standard stock pistons. Iv done about 3000 miles since these pistons were fitted and have gained a lot more acceleration, performance and the bike is still 100% reliable and has never let me down. Yamaha R6 handlebar clip-ons fitted, Alarm, always fully serviced and tuned, Tax till the end of March 2008 and MOT'd till December 2008.

What do u think and how much u think i "should" pay?

cheers : john'o
