cam cover bolts

Post by firestarter1977 »

hi all

right after fitting my new ccts i tried to torque to valve cover bolts up.

thing is i get the feeling either the bolts are about to shear or worse the threads are about to pull out.

i wondered if i should have replaced the bolts rather than use the old ones.

at worst i will have to heli coil the head. fingers crossed i can do it in situ.

anyone else come across this problem ??

EDIT:

anyone tried that permatex stuff ? supposed to repair threads upto 128 flb

so i might try new bolts and some of that stuff !! and a new torque wrench lol

You wern't over torquing them were you? ...cos they are only meant to be torqued to 10Nm if i remember correctly !

I can't even feel the clicks from my torque wrench at 10Nm, so I just do them by hand (i.e. guessing!).

thats the thing , i think my wrench is too big even though it starts at around 10 nm. but even by hand they didnt seem to want to nip up that well.

thinking about it the rear 2 have nipped ok iirc so at worst its the topp 2 that are easy to get to , will remove cover again and take a look.

m and p sell that thread repair stuff so am not too worried if i have damaged the top 2 .

will also refit 4 new bolts to be sure

10Nm is nothing... it's not a lot more than finger tight (if you could get your fingers round them to tighten them!).

I reckon you are probably not feeling the clicks on the torque wrench - mine starts at 10Nm but I still can't feel them. I would ditch the torque wrench. Just tighten them up carefully by hand. They are VERY easy to over tighten.

Try a bit of locktight bearing lock in the thread that should stop them rattling out as you only need enough pressure on them to seal the rubber gasket that should leave the bike in a running state and give you time to work out what you want to do.

Not a permanent fix I know but oil is more likely to leak from the lower part of the gasket and I think you said it’s the top two bolts that you feel are a bit iffy

Get a new torquie if your that worried about it. I just set my wrist to 10nm and that seems to work fine.

Over torquing the head is not a good idea.

Having lost skin and temper trying to get to the top two on the front cylider I've come to the conclusion that it's easier to pull the carbs off then remove the plastic plate heatshield.

It only clips on, and then you can actually SEE the buggers!
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

I sheared one of the rears because I didn't use a small torque wrench and just gave an extra "nip" for luck, and it broke off. Much farting about with drills/easy outs and re tapping the thread eventually worked and its fine now.

They need very little tightening - use a ring spanner instead of a socket so you aren't tempted to overtighten.

As for the fronts - taking the carbs etc off at the outset is much easier to access the cam cover and bolts
Two bikes, still only four cylinders!

I just used a ring spanner when tightening mine, was fine.

I did however also take off the carbs and plastic sheild to get at the top one, as it was a bitch to get back in lol.

ah sorry guys i didnt make it clear , i only removed the rear cover when fitting the ccts. i checked the torque on the front ones but didnt remove it.

1/4 drive torque wrench and new bolts ordered well bolts ordered tomorrow

also got that permatex stuff so if it is stripped will try that first and post my findings but i am thinking its just the bolts and not the threads

fingers crossed !!!

Sorry to say it will almost certainly be the threads in the ally, but fingers crossed for you....
