firestorm problems
firestorm problems
Hi Ive just got a 1998 firestorm 1000f part x for a bandit and a bit of cash, it started when i first connected the battery but then was left over night. Then next day it turned over but because i did not have the choke on started and then cut out so i tried to turn it over with the choke out but started to make a clicking noise. I have a spare battery which was used for the bandit and was left on trickle charge, i put this on and it started stright away left it over night and the clicking noise stated again. I am no mechanic but will have a go if pointed in the right direction. form Barnsley South yorkshire. thanks for any info

Re: firestorm problems
Geoff,
The clicking you're hearing is the starter solenoid, it's basically not getting enough power from the battery for it to stay in a closed circuit position. Some alarms are known to drain the battery (as Firestarter1997 mentions) but over just one night seems rather extreme, different if it had been over a couple of weeks. I'd be inclined to check the charging circuit by connecting a multi-meter (may be borrow one if you've not got one of your own) across the battery terminals when it's running. It should be showing between 13.5 - 15.5 volts.
If it turns out it is charging OK, what about the condition of your two batteries
The Firestorm needs the battery to be in very good condition, (especially this time of the year with the cold) to crank the big V twin motor over.
Keep us posted,
Chris.

Re: firestorm problems
Thanks to both of you i will hopefully check it out tonight or at the weekend, the lad i got the bike off did say it ws a new battery but it could be knackered, and the battery i put on was off a Suzuki Bandit 600 so it could be a little under power. Again thanks for the advice, i will keep you up to date.

Re: firestorm problems
Another thing to quickly check is the condition of the starter motor connection where the lead bolts onto (under the rubber hood).
If water gets into the starter / corrosion on connection then its performance will deteriorate as per your symptoms.

Re: firestorm problems
I tied it as soon as i got in from work and the clicking was still there so i removed the battery and put the original one back on, this had been on charge over night. It fired up and i checked it with the multimeter and the reading was between 13 and 14 so it seems to be charging alright i will leave it on over night and give it a go once i get home. again thanks for the advice.
