There is a trick of inserting a small rod so if and when the spring implodes there is still some residual tension to stop the chain slapping out of timing. Have a search here as it has been discussed inc converting a standard CCT into manually adjustable type by drilling and inserting a lock nutted coach bolt.

http://superhawkforum.com/ There is chap in the States fabricating manual CCTs at a good price, similar to APEs.
