Never-ending oil & filter questions
Never-ending oil & filter questions
Hi
As a new owner of a VTR 1000F (2000 edition),I'm not that familiar with the bike.
Can you please tell me what sort of oil do you use for this bike?
Also what brake oil?
Air filters
braking pads
and tyres?

Greetings to the world of storming - have you any pics you can post of your new twin beasty - Try breaking your questions into key words as a start for searching for answers in the Workshop forum
Check the downloadable pdf service manual - from the workshop sub forum sticky thread to help answer your questions on certain specs.

Brake Oil - Wouldn't recommend any oil any where near the brakes! Do you mean brake fluid? Try dot 4 (it should be written on the brake reservoir cap)
Air filter - you've got the choice between a OE Honda one or a reusable K&N
Brake pads - I use only Honda pads with the clip on heat shield on the back
http://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk/parts/part_67101/
Tires - Recommend you do a search as this is a matter of opinion depending on riding style/track or road use/milage/costs
Have fun and remember to post some pics!

All filters - OE
Engine oil Shell Advance Ultra 10W-40 or Elf Moto 4 XT Tech 10W-50
Brake pads - I use only Honda pads (gold Nissin) for front and Lucas LF or SV for rear
Brake/clutch fluid - DOT 4
Tyres - Dunlop Sportmax Roadsmart - very good grip/handling, excellent wear resistance

Re: Never-ending oil & filter questions
air/oil filter honda, oil halrfauds semi.
pads brakes EBC.
dot 4 fluid 4 brakes.
silicate free antifreeze + distilled water for coolant.
bridgestone tyres, 014 front, 021 rear changing to 016 when front worn down, roadsmart ok, but if you do motorway then expect instant cornering go for the bridges, roadsmarts need warming through or the edges are cold and u slide.
petroleum distillates in the tank, any brand will do.
A good grip, hold on for dear life up to 130 the relax.

Re: Never-ending oil & filter questions
Doesn anyone know where one can find a bug spoiler (actually a belly pan) and a rear seat cowl?Or specific vtr mods?
Thanks for all the input, here are some pictures:

Re: Never-ending oil & filter questions
the rear seat cowl is a standard fitment on the firestorm, it should come with it.
i'd try ebay for someone selling one.
the bellypan you can try M&P, for pyramid, sharkskinz, and a few other makers for them, again they are all different and it depends on what you are after.

Hi kevg,
I didn't know it is a standard (the cowl), but i'm not the first owner of the bike so....i presume it got 'lost' somewhere...
The thing is I just need one.
I've tried ebay,but no luck.
regarding the bellypan, can you be more specific (as to what M&P refers, etc)
if you can guide me to some sites, etc.
thanks.

Re: Never-ending oil & filter questions
Great pictures mate.....
Oil 10-40 semi synth
Brake dot 4
Air filter Honda or BMC (IMO )
Pads Honda or EBC (Honda variety wear the discs at a slower rate allegedly )
Belly pan ....lots of variants.....Sharkskinz, Pyramid, Moriwaki. Just ebay belly pan and see what turns up
Seat Cowel you will have to keep an eye out for ebay or breakers.

There's a red one up for auction - add a can of colour matched mellow yellow spray, a light key sand, undercoat & lacquer and you'll be away in a day

Re: Never-ending oil & filter questions
I made a visit today with my VTR at the mechanic and I'm down with some very bad news..
Seems that I bought this bike from a retard "dealer" who bought it from a guy who didn't take that much care of it.
I think it was re-painted, it's missing the left side Leo vince exhaust.
And I was told that I need to change the distribution (I think it's called cam chain).
Now I'm on the verge of setting fire to this bike, is there somebody here more technical who can help me with some useful advice?
Regards.

My friends had bridge BT021 on ZZR1400 and CBR1100XX. Now they are riding on Roadsmart, and their opinion is that roadsmart are better than BT021

Re: Never-ending oil & filter questions
///I think it was re-painted
Looks fine in the pics - graphic logos look standard - Underneath the seat there should be a white sticker on the subframe with the original paint code on it - what does yours say?
You didn't post any pics of the left side is there anything that makes you suspect it's been down the road and damaged?
///it's missing the left side Leo vince exhaust.
Is the left side blanked off? If so then 2-1 can work but probably looses you some horsies. Depending on how it is blanked off, at the worst it can be remedied by sourcing a header system for £50-150 from fleabay + cans and for good measure check the jetting /dyno etc
///And I was told that I need to change the distribution (I think it's called cam chain)
Is it rattling? if so switch it off immediately - Common problem, but lucky if you catch it before the Cam Chain Tensioner (usually front) implodes in a mess of bent valves (search for CCT for everything you wished to know but were afraid to ask) - Not usual a need to replace camchain.
Or did you mean the regulator/rectifier? again a common problem that on 97-01 models the OE RR fried taking out the battery in the process. Easily fixed by using the improved later model version or a yamaha one. (search for rectifier, and that will show you the thread covering the subject
////Now I'm on the verge of setting fire to this bike
That'd be a bit drastic - Have you had many bikes before and have you got tools & time for tinkering? Recommend you get a Haynes manual and be prepared to throw a bit of dosh at it to get it ship shape. ///I bought this bike from a retard "dealer". Or take your concerns and bike back to the dealer and get them to fix it, assuming it has a warranty.
///bought it from a guy who didn't take that much care of it.
Looking at the state of the front forks legs it looks very clean like it never saw a winter and has been garaged. Plus you've braided hoses
What milage has it got and how worn are the footpeg rubbers? How much did you pay for it?

Re: Never-ending oil & filter questions
I got a bit carried away with the bad news, so I'll take it one step at a time.
After the visit to the mechanic he told me that this bike might have been used for track.
It was repainted, probably the engine was changed (he's not sure about that until he takes a closer look).
The camchain & chain tensioner need to be changed (there's the specific rattling).
I bought this bike from somebody who bought it from somebody else, in Italy.
It shows 40800 km (mileage).
It has only one exhaust (right hand side Leo Vince SBK Evo II)
Left side is missing (see the detailed pictures below and you'll have an idea how it was done, i'm not very technical).
I've changed the oil today (smart move), I've put in motorex 15-50. The drained oil was very fluid/liquid (I suspect it was something 10-...or below 10-).
The next move would be FINDING some exhausts asap. I'm not very keen on putting stock exhausts, i'm trying to find the pair for the leo vince, but it's very hard, no luck on ebay, and I'm not paying the huge price for a new pair.
After I'll install two identical exhausts I'll go and clean & sync the carbs. And I think that's about it for this autumn.
Replacing the cam chain, cam chain tensioner & etc will be done until the spring.
I won't be taking it for any rides until then (even if I change the exhausts & tune the carbs) (perhaps 4-5 short in-town rides).
Can somebody tell me what part is that marked with red by me ? the name in english. ( I know it's related to cam chain, and I know it's for a CBR 600F, I just need it's technical name in english)

Cam chain guide
The part you should focus on replacing is the Cam Chain Tensioner unless on inspection if stripping deeply into the engine internals the whole assemby is knackered.
http://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk/part ... 520MBB003/
I wouldn't even risk short minimal short journeys - My front CCT catastrophically caused a serious amount of damage without warning while I was pootling along at 30mph. Replace the front and rear CCT at the same time - again it is rare to have to replace the camchain - try getting a 2nd opinion
Good news on the exhaust in that it looks plugged, so with a link pipe and silencer you should be okay - remember to fit a gasket between the header and link pipe
Not sure why you used 15-50 as the recommended oil is 10w-40 (Are you in the UK or somewhere warmer?) - Is the oil you used semi-synthetic or Synthetic? When you changed the oil did you notice if the sump plug was drilled (sure sign it was on the track)
If was used on the track it might not necessarily mean it was resprayed - it could have been run with scrappy bodywork then returned to standard. But again having the exhaust the way it is, which would tend to diminish the bike's potential performance hints at someone styling the bike for looks rather than outright performance.

Thanks for your input Wicky.
I used Motorex Formula 15-50 semi-synthetic and Champion oil filter.
I'm not in UK, i'm a bit more southern in Europe, a bit warmer than UK I presume.
Can you point in this picture where the gasket fits? I know my way around english words but I get a bit lost when technical terms are involved..
Also, can you (or somebody else) point me to various sites where I can purchase these items (I need them to be OEM parts):
cam chain,cam chain tensioner, etc
