Is it the CCT's?

Post by robwestwick »

Hi

I know that this is a long discussed topic, but as a complete novice at all things mechanical I have noticed a small rattle (seems to be from the front) and the paranoia has set in....

First time that I heard it was after a 4 mile ride, park up for an hour and then start up slight rattle for next 3 miles. Same thing happened again yesterday but on a longer ride and from cold start up.

My storm is a 1999 with just under 17k miles, don't think that the CCT's have been changed. Should I go for auto or manual adjustors and how much should I expect a mechanic to charge me for this work?

Any help or advice appreciated :)

depending where you take it, if the mechanic isn't familiar wit the vtr he will most probably set the timing 180 out.
if it was cct you would know cos it sounds like a lolly stick in a pushbike wheel. 8O
could be clutch rattle or valve clearances.

up to you re manuals or new oem tensioners.
rider on a storm does good manual ccts, better than apes imo.
or david silvers for original ones for 32 each.

theyre easy to fit if you follow the guide in the workshop section

+1, if you take it to a mechanic ask them whether they need to set the engine in a particular place to change each one- if they don't know that this is essential, don't trust them with your bike.

I'm only in Sevenoaks, if you want to drop by I'll have a listen, if that helps.

just a note - you still need to follow the workshop guide if you are fitting honda auto tensioners.

Guys thanks for the quick replies, it was odd that I had downloaded Sirch's workshop guide to CCT's the day before with the plan of changing them over the winter as a bit of a project. The rattle could well be the clutch and I have read the recent thread from rider on a storm on this, so I will check it out. TBH the rattle is nothing like a lollipop stick, so could well be paranoia or clutch.

Do you need to keep adjusting the manual tensioners and are they easy to set up?

Tony - I will catch up with you at some point for the expert ear, I'm in West Wickham so about a short ride away. Very busy with family and work at present, so will PM you to see when you are available when I have a bit more free time.
