are current speed limits out of date
did you know that the current speed limit (70mph) were set in the 60's based on stopping distances of old fords and rovers of that era, now modern cars (forget bikes the government never factor them in research) with can pull up loads quicker than that even non abs cars so is it time they put the limit up on motorways? I know thinking time will probably be the same but brake and tyre tech has moved on since 70mph was introduced but the limit hasn't?

I have thought long and hard on this one and here is my reply in various stages to keep it simple to understand.

But there's lots more vehicles on the road these days, so the chances of there being one inside your safe stopping distance is probably worse now.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Re: are current speed limits out of date
i think the 30 & 40 limits should stay as they are there for a reason.
some roads should be limited, but others shouldnt, like motorways and some dual carriageways 100 is crouton all.
some drivers arent confident at 70mph & imo they shouldn't be on the roads anyway - make the roads unrestricted and scare them onto public transport where they belong.
& ffs bring in an age limit for drivers & mandatory retest & medical at 70.

You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when posting something which you later rely on in quote. Anything you do say may be ripped to sh*t.

But that'll mean slowing down and stopping, unless the GP carrying out the medical is driving at 70 alongside.
seems a bit extreme, TBH.

Only you Tony could be that literal !!!

"Only ride as fast as your guardian angel can fly" !!!
Re: are current speed limits out of date
i think even 20/30mph limits are wrong i think if traffic was travling faster people would make more use of crossings and have their wits about them,
you can introduce as many laws and health and saftey regs as you like but you will only protect a stupid person from injury/death for so long.

Yep. Min age 21 or 22 should help.& ffs bring in an age limit for drivers
Two bikes, still only four cylinders!

im sure you would be the first to offer to ferry about all the 16 to 22 year olds that need to get back and forth to work at all hours of the day and night, esp in rural areas when you get a service bus twice a day if your lucky.

Re: are current speed limits out of date
Well, the thread was about road safety I thought, and statistically that age group are the most at risk on the roads. Also, young males 17-21 are the most at risk of violent crime, so they might do themselves a favour by staying local!MJONESY wrote:seriously?Stratman wrote:Yep. There are a few leggy 16 - 22 year olds about in Norwich at weekends that I wouldn't mind ferrying back to my place I mist say.
And, finally, mine are aged 23 and 30 so I'm selfish
