Rear Shock

Post by Jester666 »

Daft question but is the rear shock spring removable?

ie Can I change it for another one Hyperpro/Hagon etc? Just trying to improve the back end without the £400 cost of a new shock.

Tight? Me?

here's a very nice yacugar progressive rear spring for firestorm.
£80 from ftr suspension 01284 752 102
if you take your shock to them they will fit the spring for free.

Jester, Mike is right, I fitted a Maxton spring to my standard Firestorm shock to suit my body weight. It's definitely better than the standard spring and a cheaper alternative to a more expensive shock. I would still like a more expensive shock sometime, but for now for the money I'm happy with it.

Tim (Timbo) also had a Maxton shock spring fitted to one of his Firestorm's a while back, Although he's not running a Firestorm now I think he was happy with it.

Mine looked like this with the Maxton spring fitted:-

Sorry if this is a stupid question.

Can the shock spring be removed and replaced without any special tools? or would I have to take the shock somewhere?

You will need a spring compressor for a start, so for the cost of that for one spring change, is it worth it?

Much easier to take it to someone who knows what they are doing!

I've just bought a hyperpro front progressive springs kit inc fitting bits and oil, plus rear progressive coil from the bike show- all in £190 delivered. They are in Coventry, I'm near Oxford and they said they'd fit the rear spring to my original showa shock for free (5 min job), though a local mobile mechanic (he does travel-London, north etc) has a spring compressor and so he is doing it for me. Ive heard it should make a big difference. Planning to clean up swing arm hinging pivot when rear all loose as well- make a proper job of it. I'll let you know how it goes. Hyperpro corporate colour for the spring is purple but I've opted for black as my VTR is yellow- too many strong colours going on there!! Griff. :D
KriegerCCTs,HEL oil lines,+4 advancer,+1/-1 sprockets,6mm spacer,CBR1k Sidestand,'07 R1 R/R,HyperPro springs F&R,Pipe Werx SL Carbons,Oxford sports hot grips,Mori style belly
Immediate plans:Clean it!

Hi. I'm same distance the other side of Oxford than you are! I'm in a place called Lewknor J6 M40. Could go for a ride in the better (warmer) weather!!
