Sticking throttle

Post by pinkyfloyd »

As you are aware from the "what have you done" thread I had my bike tipped by the local chavy scum brigade. Damage is as follows:

Bent brake lever...... New levers ordered to replace.
Broken peg hanger...... New assembly ordered and a friend is going to help remove the swing arm pin and fix it. (Why do the storm hangers go through the swing arm bolts?)
Scratched exhaust and mirror..... can live with the damage.

The above I can fix with a mates help however the throttle is sticking. I twist and it stays open, theres no return in it at all. At first I thought the bar end had caused it but I've had that off today and still no cure.

Any ideas whats happened and how I can cure this. Needless to say I can still ride the bike around when I get the new hanger on the thing but its a tad dangerous as I will have to remember to close the throttle rather than it doing it naturally.
And if the band you're in starts playing different tunes, I'll see you on the dark side of the moon.

Hey bud, I would check the throttle cables, if it went over on it's right side something might have kinked the cable and just be stopping it from returning.
The throttle cables are returned by the spring on the side of the carb, so I would say you have either a kink or a break somewhere.
Let us know what you find!

I agree, if the 2 cables are fighting each other the throttle will stick, make sure no kinks and adjust in a bit more slack and see if that helps

hi pinky i had similar probs when bike was dropped on right hand side only went over with wind and outwarldy no damage till i took her for a run and found i had cruise control, bit scarey ,but found bar had bent just under the twistgrip .This is a weakpoint as that is where honda drill the bars to make throttle actuator stop points.Easily fixed take bar off clamp casting in vice with rag to protect it then support other end and hit it right on the crease i used combi spanner but use your own way full explanation would be to complicated and probably insult your intelligence

Cheers for the replies. Will have a look at it when the parts arrive to get the work done. Not going near the thing until then as it just depresses me every time. We've had a few stunning days here and every bike thats passed has made me jealous.

Neighbour has offered to help me out, he has a garage with a hydraulic bike lift and between us we'll get the beastie back on the road. I'll have a good look at the throttle cable then and the bar end.

Thanks lads.

You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when posting something which you later rely on in quote. Anything you do say may be ripped to sh*t.

Did you drop yours or did some scroat push it over? If I had dropped my beastie I wouldnt be as upset. But I was sitting at home chilling with my cocoa looking forward to my birthday the following day when some scroat thought it would be a good idea to pus the bike over.

My throttle jammed last year only weeks after a repsol respray, and had to bail off the back to watch the bike shoot off up the road gaining hieght on the back wheel till it flipped and catapulted into the air lol

Ouchies. I would have cried. So you definatly dont recomend riding the bike until the throttle issue is fixed then. Helpful tip.

Might limp it down to the local mechanic and have him sort it out. I'm still learning the basics of these things as the only mechanical knowladge I have ever had is closing oven doors in a kitchen.

just swapped my clipons for a vfr set last week, same thing, had cruise control, removed them and degreased bar and then added a smear of 3 in one, smooth as silk now and no nasty surprises :D

Mine sticks a bit, as I fitted soft rubber grips and din't trim them short enough.
You can train yourself to shut it rather than rely on the spring, if you do it for a while it gets to be second nature.
Then if it doesn't shut by itself you're less likely to bin it.
Or if you ride someone else's bike and theirs doesn't shut as Quick as yours does....

I once had a bike that had a shortened throttle cable fitted with a ball nipple instead of a drum one.
It wore and stared to pull through the plastic housing, so I fitted it on the "push" side, to get me home.
It stayed that way for a couple of months; funny what you can get used to......
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!
Not old enough for "comfortable bars" as yet......Maybe the time will come, and if it's that or stopping riding ok, but

Nnoooooooooooooooooooooo!!
Might as well get a Varadero.
Still feel a bit queasy 'cause I have a clock fitted. And that's digital, at least.

Just my opinion, of course, no 'fence intended to those who walk a different path. Kudos to you, 'cause it's down to us all to do what we want with our own bike and then ride it.

But what the hell is Kudo, BTW???
Is it one of them big lizardy things?
:confused
