See now I used to like you.

Now on a more serious note. How do I check without taking the bike apart to see if its already been done?

Heres my logic. I've a 1999 Storm, therefore the old Reg/rec comes as standard which has a tendancy to go pop. After breaking down with a wiring issue the other week I discovered that the Reg had been changed to a finned one. I've not had the chance to work out if its an R6 model or just another Honda part.

So.....

I'm wondering if the bike used to belong to an ex member of the forum and has had the work carried out. Need to know what I'm looking for before panicking to get the work done. I dont want to order the new parts only to find I've wasted money and time stripping the bike.

Standard ones look like a metal sexual aid, manuals look like a big bolt. Just have a look at the back of rear cylinder.

However, one with a stopper mod done is a bit harder to spot.

But you can tell without stripping it out.

When you check the spring in a standard one, you put a tiny screwdriver onto the end of the tensioner (remove the 8mm bolt and you'll be able to feel the end of the tensioner).
If you turn the screwdriver anticlockwise, you should be able to unscrew the tensioner two complete turns.
If the stopper mod has been done, then it should become tight and unscrewing it further is not possible.

However, unscrewing the adjuster more than two turns could cause the cam chain to become loose enough to jump sprocket teeth, and so under the circumstances I can only recommend that you do this once the cams have been set in the correct position; just as though you were going to replace the tensioners with manuals.

If you have set the engine to the correct place in order to change cct's as per the instructions in the workshop sticky then you can safely unscrew the tensioner more than two complete turns, and so you can be more certain about whether a stopper mod has been done.

But at that time you might as well just fit manuals.......
PM me if you need any more info or assistance.

Looks like its still on STD ones. Will have to get them sorted out soon enough. At the moment its fundage for the parts though. Thats the problem. lol.

Do it sooner rather than later mate - mine cost £260 as the heads needed to come off too - luckily no bent valves, that cost was just gaskets, shims and a lot of labour. Still on the plus side - valve clearances were done...

Do the stopper mod, it costs nothing but your time, it gives you all the benifits of the auto tensioner, with the security of a manual ( or better, as it won't undo with vibration!). In my opinion it is the best solution, but what do I know, I am only a mechanical engineer :D
