Passed Mod 2.

Post by vtryorks »

Well, I did it.

Was on a high, until I called Carole Nash, who refuse to insure me on the VTR because it has race cans and I'm not experienced enough to handle race cans apparently. Their words....

I hope this doesnt turn into a disaster in insurance terms, otherwise my joy at passing will be short lived.

Erk.

I've just paid £538 for TPFT! Egads. Bikesure.

They offer a 14 day money back guarantee to beat/match. So I'll phone around tomorrow and see if I can do any better, seems high, but I've passed today and got no experience they will care about.

Still, seems a lot! At least its insured.

Congratulations

I have spare set of std cans that you can borrow if you want to avoid any stress on the Race Can issue.

I also have a set of debaffled ones, which give you all the noise and still all the Honda part numbers and insurance approvals :D , but I still have them on the bike till I sort out a new set of race cans with removable baffles, but they may come free soon.

Congrats mate...

That insurance is a rip off...im sorry but that is just stupid.

As for cans, as long as they dont affect performance, they should not put up the price of affect the quote, they didnt with mine.

Try go compare and compare the market sites. They both do quotes for bikes and that is how I got mine. I know that I have no claims, but you're probably older, wiser and more 'life experience' which will work in your favour - mine cost £140 TPFT with either 3 or 4 years No claims. Even if im getting 60% discount, you should be able to get insured for £350 maximum...

a massive weldone on passing m8, as far as insurance is concerned as you said you are going straight onto a 1000cc sports bike, imagine if that was a sports car what would your insurance be then?
the only advice i have for you is shop around you might be surprised a few hours hunting on the internet and ringing around can save you hundreds of pounds.
in my expirence with bike insurance is one that i will not ride a bike without fully comp anymore, but i understand it takes time to build up to that, goodluck with it buddy.......

Thanks guys, you're all very kind!

I managed to reassemble the VTR after completing the work on the sub frame. I took her out for a spin tonight for the first time, first time ever on a VTR (as rider). In fact, my first time on a bike with a fairing, first sports bike, first V2, first Honda. Lots of firsts, then.

After pottering out of the road looking extremely amateurish, I soon got the feeling of the bike and I've been happily riding around all evening, frightening old ladies and children with the roar of my exhaust, or something.

The bike is good. I wont say awesome (yet), because the power delivery is a little rough from low speed, also the odd backfire. I'm almost certain the carbs need doing, so thats the next job on the list for sure.

Having said that it handles great and I love the fact you can sit at 70mph at 4k rpm, its so effortless. Overtaking, even in 5th, was brisk but drop it to 4th and theres a heck of a wallop.

One thing I noticed, not sure if its me, the bike, or the road, or all of the above, but the back end seems a tiny bit skittish on sharp corners, even if I'm very gentle with the thottle. Noticed it a couple of times, it just felt like it momentarily lost grip, mini power slide. I guess its the torque but I'm not revving high or dropping too many gears, so maybe tyres are worn or its just my crappy technique?

I'm still trying, probably stupidly, to compare it to the bandit 12 I had, even though it was long ago. 1st and 2nd gear on the V2 are simply too much for the roads local to me (and my skill level), warp factor 9 is far too easy to hit using 2nd. It definitely feels faster than the bandit, but, even with a carburation issue, controllable.

I feel like i need to learn to ride all over again to get the best from the V2. So miles on the clock will be my aim, just as soon as I get those pesky carbs sorted.

Overall, i'm chuffed to bits, a bit of maintenance work and I think I'll be extremely happy with this bike.

So, rock on to our VTR's.

Back end is over sprung, so perhaps you need to drop the preload to lowest and see I'f that helps.

The throttle can be a bit snatchy, might be worth lifting the idle speed, and don't be afraid to work the clutch.

Back fires are normal, ride and it will start to become familiar, they are very different to the big IL4 like the bandits

Ahh righty. Cheers mate.

Also, I forgot to mention, occassionally, the engine makes a bit of a coughing noise too. Is that normal also? Its not a sound I am familiar with, but its like a split second loss of power and a cough.

I've got the idle speed set at 1200 at the moment, after reading around.

PS. It only seems to backfire when I let off the throttle.

The cough stall is common. Back fires on the overrun are also normal if it is only mild, but to many or too big is a sign of an air leak in the exhaust.
