vtr. in the beginning....

Post by rob... »

starting with this, totally standard VTR 21k, FSH, very tidy.

Image

at the moment the final goal is to end up with the following mods, see how we go, it might change.... my projects usually evolve.
loadsa dyno time will be needed, but it's free, so best take advantage of it....

motor;
higher comp, either head skim or new slugs.
slot cam sprockets and play with cam timing.
open topped air box with pipercross filter and longer inlet trumpets.
race cans and link pipes for now, full one-off stainless system later.
lightened flywheel.
fully set up on dyno.
look at cam profiles for more midrange.
one mod at a time, with a dyno run after each one. i'l post up specs/print outs as i go.

body;
single 7" round headlight.
USD front end.
risers and 'normal' bars.
underseat radiator.
vfr800 tank.
braided hoses.
rearsets.

i like playing with motors, my last one was a 1200 bandit taken out to 1340, gsxr750 head, gas-flowed, polished and ported head by roger upperton, busa con rods, JE piston kit, MRE multi stage lock up clutch, undercut gear box, lightened, knife-edged and balanced crank, FCR flatslide carbs, etc.... it now lives in one of the local sprint bikes.
as posted in my intro, i also build custom frames etc but not in ally, so i'll leave the frame alone.

any thoughts/tips appreciated. 8)

http://ablett.jp/bikes/vtr/air_box3.htm Trashed his carburettion with an open airbox

Search for airbox here and see more problem posts relating to suttering when it has been altered/leaking air/pipes not secured. On the Superhawk forum they even frown at replacing the stock airfilter with a K&N/Pipercross filter as these apparently lose mid-range and give a modicum of top end (I have K&N with dynojet and dyno time).

However if you have access to a dyno then you have the opportunity to do some evidence based research on the validity of such mods.

If you intend to fit a larger VFR tank then (IIRC) the base of the tank can be used to create a sealed lid to the airbox. Search is your friend as to what has been tried before and not everything that gives tidy gains on an UJM translates to work on the storm.

Revolution Racing have turned out bikes with the following tuning and are owned by members here. http://www.revolutionuk.co.uk/

Stage 2 = 140+BHP H/C Pistons, Porting & Gasflowing, Full engine”Blueprint”, Full tuned Exhaust system, Airbox mods (Special airbox and front scoop for Track only usage) PC3R + K&N filters, Cooling fins, Fork tune, Penske shock

Stage 3 = 158+BHP Full HRC/Moriwaki/ Revolution RACE ONLY Bike. This bike has everything and is capable of being competitive at top National level.

VTR1000F Stage 1A to 3 110 – 150 BHP. A truly great riding experience. The Stage 3 was raced by Mark Ditchfield and “guest” raced by Gus Scott in British Superbikes. This was reported in Performance Bikes as ‘a fantastic ride’. This is truly a great bike.

i'm impressed with the linear power curve. the lean spike @ 2k expains the 'chugging'....
as you say a good datum to start from...
