Fork overhaul
Fork overhaul
My forks are severly in need of a quick overhaul,
I need to get them sorted quickly, I commute about 300 miles a week and so really must get these done next weekend
Any one know if these ebay seals are ok or i'm open to suggestions?

Luckily I now have an ABBA stand, alas i don't have a front end lifter so I'll have to work something out for that.

Re: Fork overhaul
I would always go genuine parts for fork seals, ended up replacing 2 sets of cheapy ebay ones on my old yzf in about 12 months, sold the bike before the genuine ones needed doing but lasted longer than the cheap ones did, and they aren't so much dearer anyway.

Fork overhaul
Oem all the way
And you would be better off doing the bushes and spring at the same time
If on the cheep only do the bushes seals and oil just make sure you pump all the old oil out and give them a good clean
And don't damage the seals upon refitting
Sorry officer
The voices made me do it

Re: Fork overhaul
If you only have an Abba stand, or use a jack under the sump, you can strap the rear down, or possibly place heavy weights on the rear seat, and the front end will come off the ground.
I used to use a jack and an old toolbox full of big old spanners.
Once the front wheel's weight is off, it'll stay up ok, and you can then remove one leg at a time to work on it.
Don't remove both at the same time, then the yokes won't twist.

It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Re: Fork overhaul
Yes, you need two sets of seals as I found out halfway through the second leg.
I purchased everything, 2 dust seals and 1 "set of fork oil seal" only to find out a set is one seal and one dust seal WTF, to me that would be like buying a set of handlebar grips, opening the packet and finding one grip and one clipon.
So in panic, I got the shop to Fed ex me one seal thinking it would arrive on a Monday and still be stuffed for work a bit. + £18.00 ish
I later found another supplier who had a seal / dust set, so went along and brought them at another £18.00, just so i could get to work on the Monday.
Also remember your fork oil as well.
All in all, not cheap

Re: Fork overhaul
quite often if a seal is leaking people only repair the leaking one, so single seal sets are common.
I'd always replace as a pair, and oil at the same time, using decent oil- it feels much better for much longer, using decent parts and set up right, not as Honda or Haynes tell it.

Is the oil and seal replacment enough for a marked improvement or is a new spring recomended???tony.mon wrote:quite often if a seal is leaking people only repair the leaking one, so single seal sets are common.

Depends on what you are looking for and money.Diabolus wrote:Is the oil and seal replacment enough for a marked improvement or is a new spring recomended???
When I did my seals I also changed the oil to 15w and Hyperpro progressive springs.
The springs are better IMO to the standard ones (although some people prefer linear springs) and I put hevier oil in as I prefer a stiff front end! Oh er!!

Re: Fork overhaul
I had a problem with new original Honda seals leaking,i took them back to the Honda dealer who agreed, they should be tighter on the forks.
When holding the seal, just the weight of the chrome stanchion through the seal would enable the stanchion to fall out of the seal. The Honda Tech said this should not happen.
I then bought the aftermarket ones from ebay, im sure they were Pyramid brand, they worked a treat, and i'm almost certain the Honda and Pyramid ones had identical markings.
Iirc, the Honda items only had one tension spring fitted to the seal, but the Pyramid seal had an upper and lower spring fitted .
Was a long time ago, i can remember starting a thread about it on here
