Buggered, Need help !!
Buggered, Need help !!
Right, here goes.
Had a go at fitting manual CCT's this weekend. Now bike wont run for more than 30-60 secs, then dies.
Start it on full choke, tick over fast for about 10 seconds, popping and farting like mad, then slows down and dies. If I blip the throttle, coughs and splutters, then dies.
Start on no choke, does pretty much the same, without the popping and farting. Again, go near the throttle, she dies. Then wont start again unless on full choke, and the process goes round and round.
For the short time it does run, it sounds fine, no untoward noises goming from the engine as far as I can tell. Sounds the same as before I touched it, just wont run.
If it was just running rough, I would ride it somewhere to get it sorted. No way its going anywhere as it is, and I havent got a trailer.
I'm guessing the timing's got knocked out somehow, but I did follow the installation guide on here to the letter !!
Any help would be much appreciated, and don't expect anything for nothing.
Cheers.

Re: Buggered, Need help !!
Sounds very much like you have trapped one of the hoses when refitting the tank. (Had the same problem when I did mine.

Yeah. But to be honest I think the same thing myseld and did check those, but they seem fine.turbo_billy wrote:Sounds very much like you have trapped the fuel line when refitting the tank. (Had the same problem when I did mine.)
I don't think I've done any damage, as all sounds ok. Just wont run, wish I'd never touched the bloody thing now !!

Re: Buggered, Need help !!
Firstly check the vacuum hose is correctly fitted to the back of the fuel tap rather than the more obvious but incorrect position underneath.
Did you cable-tie the rear cam chain and sprockets together to stop them jumping when delving in that region when removing the old CCTs and installing the new 'uns? And then correctly turn it round the set amount of degrees before doing the front one blind (i.e without taking off the front cam cover) without any sound of ping of camchain jump?
Where are you located? so if someone who's done the job can pop over and take a gander.

It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

No, didnt cable tie anything, but did find TDC and all that as instructed.Wicky wrote:Firstly check the vacuum hose is correctly fitted to the back of the fuel tap rather than the more obvious but incorrect position underneath.

Ah, the old vacuum hose mistake. Congratulations, you are number 788!
Two bikes, still only four cylinders!

You blokes are legends, thanks a million, owe you a beer. Shes purring like a pussy cat now.
While I'm here, quick question. Going to fine tune the CCT's when I get the chance, turn them out slowly till I hear the rattle, then back in a fraction. Question is what does it sound like, and is it blatantly obvious?? Don't want to turn them out too far obviously, but want to make sure the chains not tight either.
Ta !!

Re: Buggered, Need help !!
You'll know when you hear it, give it a go.
No more than two full turns out, and all will be fine.
If the tickover speeds up as you undo the bolt, it was too tight.

It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

The only thing I'm concerned about, is if its almost perfect already, two full turns for instance, would be much too far, right??
Thats why I really would like to know exactly what to listen for. It seems there's so many variables with this, theres plenty of scope to get it wrong.

Re: Buggered, Need help !!
Can't help you any more than this.
You WILL know what a rattle sounds like when you hear it.
Just undo the thing and see/hear what I mean.
Otherwise, take it to someone who knows, and ask them to show you.
Where are you in the UK?

Re: Buggered, Need help !!
To be honest mate I think its fine. There was I bit of a tappety tap, and I tightened them down a bit, not sure if I was imagining it but it seemed to get a bit quieter. Let the bike run till hot, no probs at all. I'll let someone listen at the workshop day, but I think its ok. Ridden it and all seems well.tony.mon wrote:Can't help you any more than this.

You're meant to stop worrying when you fit manuals, not the other way round...!

Re: Buggered, Need help !!
I wasn't worried when I had the originals in. My last storm did 37000 before I needed to change them, even then it didnt go pop, just noticed a rattle. But it was a while back and cant remember what to listen for now. Pretty sure all is well now though, rode it to work Tuesday and gave it the beans a couple of times, any probs would have shown up me thinkstony.mon wrote:You're meant to stop worrying when you fit manuals, not the other way round...!
