Hey guys
Spent the weekend in the garage with the VTR, pulled and stripped one fork leg out without any issues, however leg 2 is a nightmare! the seal has rusted so badly that I can't get it free from the lower. I have been sliding the tube back and forth to try and "hammer" it out with no joy, left it to soak for a couple of hours in WD40 to try and loosen the rust but no dice. It just won't budge!.
anyone have any ideas or suggestions? if I cant get it out I may have to buy a new fork
Fork seal nightmare
Re: Fork seal nightmare
I've used this method with 100% success.
You will need:
The fork (obviously)
2 litres of CHEAP oil- anything will do
A car jack
2 pieces of thick wood
A building
A car or similar.
Fill the fork about 95% full of the oil, then put the car or similar parallel to the building about 4-6 inches wider than the fork leg.
Place the 2 bits of wood at each end of the fork, including the jack at either end.
Slowly pump the jack so that the fork starts to compress, pump some more, and wait for it............the seal will pop.
Bit messy this method, but has never failed me.

Jonesey - I never thought about that, I can give that a try!
Kev L - got the clip out no problems, but always a good idea to check basics first
