bellypan restoration

Post by KarlosVTR »

well after paying for what i thought was a rub down and respray bellypan, ive found that i paid loads of money for a previously battered bellypan thats been hastily repaired and not very well.

heres a few pics

looks ok eh?

Image

first suspect area. iffy filler job, cracks all over.

Image

this bit was a bit of raised paint. on inspection, it wasnt attached to the surface at all

Image

a crack that wont get any worse, ill say why in a bit

Image

nasty filler job, hiding absolutely nothing

Image

non stuck paint again

Image

so all in all it needs stripping down to the red gel coat and starting again. its awful trying to sand through black ENAMEL!!!!! plasticote if im not mistaken.

it looks like its been painted in the rain at some point too.

and the inability to crack further you ask? well i noticed its heavy. unexpectedly heavy. its been layed up once or more on the inside. more than it was originally. ok, admitedly its a bonus in a way as its now strong. but christ sakes. bodged repairs. urgh.

i had to massage the mounting kit too since the brackets made it tuck under the fairing and scuff like crazy. now at least it fits ok

this will hopefully look like something honda would have been happy to stick on their bikes soon

and after a day of using 40 grit to remove what appeared to be a kilo of filler and paint this came out

im not joking i think the guy put so much random filler in because he hadnt got the dexterity to get certain areas prepped. methinks 'fingers like richmonds' is fitting

What's that, the tips of your fingers, You mention 40 grit scratch, are you not using wet n dry? It's also good for removing mud when wet

Looking like a big improvement keep up the good work

At first I though that looks like a dogyish paint job then I scrolled down to the lacquered version and thought that looks nice, a metallic tangy orange with a lovely shine. Then scrolled further and it had turned Red  and I have a calibrated monitor  It's amazing how lighting affect colour!

Bloody good paint job there Karlos Blends in nice with the rest of the bike. Got to say the bike looks more on the Red side than Orange though
