Rear tyre temperature indicator

Post by VTRdH »

Hi you all,

Here example of my VTR's rear tyre temp indicator.
It's very low cost , based on infrared system. Mounted the infrared eye on the hugger, close to tyre surface. It measures only surface temp.
Connected with cable to the small lcd screen next to clip-on. You can get real time indication which is very nervous , going up/down all the time or push the button and get a fixed temp indication for that moment. Works on a small battery for a couple of years now.
It's not the most "high tech" system but it works really good and ggives a good indication of the temperature development on the tyre's surface.
( I was surprised about the time it takes before the tyre really is on full grip temperature when riding on normal roads , even with BT014 which is a soft tyre)

The whole system

Well ????? It took me two weeks
Haha, depending on the weather and the kind of roads average 10-20 minutes.( dry cond.) But also depending on the type of tyre, the BT 014 rear was a waist of money to be honest.
Only held it's grip for around 2700 miles, after that it was rubbish and in the rain a complete pain in the ass.Only good for track days I thin

I don't know if you can call him a clever chap :D :D :D but the two of us try to develope cheap gadgets. In the past we allready had an dry sump oil temperature indicator for the TRX, a shift gear indicator and a angle indicator. All just for the fun.
Most of time i have an idea and he manages to build it (as long as it is electronics) so what you may call a perfect team.
We also made some software for datalogging (for the raceteam) and another one to calculate difference in speed per gear if you chance sprockets(front or rear)
Especially in wintertime this gives some fun.And allthough not professional most of it works  against low costs.
If there are ideas we are allways ready to have a look at it
