That is a nettle no politician will grasp my friend. In my view there has to be an ultimate deterant, without it these scrotes, who know that the law is now completely toothless, understand they can literally get away with murder and serve 10 years, if convicted. Society needs to take a long hard look at itself, realise that if you worship youth, and commend it's naievity and all that goes with it whilst de-valueing age, wisdom and experience you end up with a self centred, uncaring society where the pursuit of greed is admired.
Sad, sad times.
Sad, sad times.

Re: What is this Country coming to..
I can't even imagine what was going through that monsters mind when he was attacking this poor old lady. Just what makes a person do this?
Desperation, anger.....or did he get off on it. Is this person now a nervous wreck, waiting for the knock on the door, or does he even give a toss? Every right thinking individual wishes that this animal suffers every minute of every day for the rest of his life.
Call me naive but I would hazard a guess that this person is a drug addict. It is about time that we as a country got to grips with this problem. The amount if crime committed by hard drug users is not only staggering, but it's the depravity these individuals will sink to to get their next fix. Here's a small statistic. In my birth city of Dundee, 88% of all cases in the Sheriff (Magistrates) court are linked to Heroin use!
I don't however think that bringing back capital punishment is the answer. It just does not work. We all want to deter this type of crime but hanging one innocent person is too high a price to pay. Yes DNA might prove things beyond doubt but does it really? Evidence in the past (even DNA and fingerprinting) has been misrepresented by the police. Just where would you draw the line?
Oh, this killer was caught because of DNA....we hang him. Meanwhile, the family of another murder victim are wanting vengeance as they know the killer of a loved one is guilty but there is no DNA to prove it. Won't they say its unfair? We just can't kill on the word of a jury, judge, copper. It could be one of our relatives convicted of murder whilst truly innocent. Where would that leave you?
The answer is not the punishment, its the prevention. Our society is fuc**d up. Deal with the druggies, piss heads and reprobates. The whole of society is to blame for this. Its a set of complex interwoven problems which cause crimes like this. Basically though, we all need to look within ourselves and examine the things we tolerate or turn a blind eye to.
My answer, not foolproof but a start.
Manitory life sentences for murder. Life means life.
Build prisons for hardened criminals, not in the cities but on one of the UK's many offshore islands. All these druggies and morons to serve time there, sentencing commensurate with the number of repeat offences committed.
Monitoring of these druggies, blood testing etc. Make any sign of class A drugs in the bloodstream an offence.
Deal with the dealers. Life sentences for these peddlers of misery.
